Split transaction won't allow an account

Bug Description

I am trying to use the split transaction feature to load my pay statements. I was using 0.9.2 and just upgraded to 0.9.3.cvs. Now when I try and enter the money taken from my pay for my 401K Account, the split transaction window wants to put that in a category. It's not a category, it's an account. I didn't have any problem before installing .9.3.cvs.

In addition, I can't change the date on the edit field for any transaction. If I try, the "enter" option grays out.

Is it possible to roll back to a previous version of the program?

BTW system is Kubuntu Jackalope on intel pentium.

Hei Ku,
I'm moving from MS Money where entering my pay statements were much easier. I attempted to export and import to move the all the accounts over. The imports worked EXCEPT it didn't import any of my split transaction pay statements.

In .9.2 I enter the split transactions without any problem. Upgrading to .3 won't allow me to enter the withholding for the 401 accounts.

The way I performed it in msmoney was that the 401 contributions were "transferred" to a holding account. Then in the investment accounts the stock / mutual fund "buys" are taken from the 401 holding accounts.
I have a similar configuration in .2 and it appears to be working. However in .3 the split transaction wants a category.

How can I indicate that the money is withheld and placed in a different account to cover the 401 purchases? Especially since I already have many "deposits" in the holding accounts?

In addition when trying to enter any new records, or attempting to change the date on any existing record, as soon as I change the date, the enter key grays out and the only option I have access to is cancel.

I "uninstalled" ,3 and re-installed .2 so I can continue entering all the corrections to the import and actually start using the program.

Thanks for listening.

I am using the latest version and I have no problem entering accounts for split transactions.

For your case, you usually have a brokerage account. That is, a cash account used for investments. If you haven't created it at the same time as you created the investment, you can add it as a subaccount with the same name and "(Brokerage)" at the end.

A number of error messages popped up and then it appeared to scramble the
program.

The starting icon changed. The program complained about an io port?
eventually the program opened the account but all of the icons were missing.
That's when I went to the forums and looked up repair strategies and came
across fixing the installation.

Since I added his repositories to the software sources, I ran apt-get update
and apt-get install and it appeared to "fix" the program but with the
observed issues. Can't change the dates of any transactions, and the
insistence of a category for the split transactions.

I used synaptic to remove the program and removed Clay's repositories from
the software sources and then used kpackagedit to reinstall .9.2-1

You shouldn't have got any errors when installing from Clay's PPA. BTW, you should have added the repo instead of installing the .deb, but that's a different story.

Anyway, I have a similar setup and it's working fine. All I can think of is that you have some weird accounts, related to the import, and in 0.9.3 we have added some controls. That might be what's triggering your problems.

Did you say the import didn't bring in transactions which had multiple splits? Are they perhaps investments? Because I know that MS Money has trouble when importing investment accounts.

Point out which accounts have the problem, because the names and amounts are scrambled on the anonymous file to protect your privacy.

I believe the issue is with account 6.

My pay statement consists of "deposits"
WAGES & SALARY "categories"
Regular Pay
Overtime
Work out of class
Holiday
Vacation
Overtime Meals
etc.
Money is "with held" for
TAXES: "categories"
Federal Tax
State Tax
FICA High
FICA
State Disability
"INVESTMENTS" "Accounts"
401K Contributions
401A Contributions
Retirement Contributions
DUES: "categories"
Union and Company
Result = Net Deposit

I treat the 401 and retirement "charges" as transfers. I'm transferring money from the "company" and into the "accounts".

Now this works with.9.2 but when I tried .9.3 it insisted that the 401 "INVESTMENTS" needed to be categories. In addition I couldn't change the transaction dates for any transaction, either existing or new. As soon as I changed the date from "today" the enter option grayed out.

As to the import from MS Money the program didn't seem to have any problems importing the "investment" accounts. The only problem with the import deals with the entries for my main checking account where I had all the transaction details "splits" for my payroll deposits. Where I only had the deposit amount it imported the values. For the detailed ones it just skipped them. I am manually loading them into the program. Based on how many years I have records for, I need to enter about 182 more. Not fun but if it works...

As I said before, you are handling this the wrong way. You should have a brokerage account for these cases.

Some controls were added in 0.9.3 to prevent issues in investment transactions, that's why it won't let you Accept the transaction when you edit it.

I agree but how is that accomplished. All the split allows are categories. I need the money to go to the account, which is how I thought I had it set up.

I have all of the with held money placed in an investment account and then make the 410 buys from that account. What's the difference between an investment account and an asset account?

You cannot change the type of an account.

For what you want to do, you can either create an asset account, which you include in your pay transaction, and later you transfer money from that account to your 410k account (which should be an investment account), or you can create a brokerage subaccount in your 410k account, and you transfer your money from your pay transaction to that brokerage.

Either way, you should take a look at the KMyMoney manual, the Accounts and Investment chapters will be of use to you.

Thanks,
That's what I figured out already. I built an asset account and brute force
moved all of the investments out of the two 401 investment accounts. Now both of those accounts are empty; how can I delete them? There are no transactions to either of them and no statements in either account, yet the delete option is grayed out. I'd like to remove them to reduce the on screen clutter.

Also there doesn't seem to be any way to set a starting balance in an investment account once it's built. Kind of a pain.

I've read through most of the on-line manual and it leaves a lot of questions.

Thank you so much. I still had them loaded in the schedule. I deleted them from there and I was able to delete the account.

However I still have a problem. In investments if I select the option to allow on-line updating, (Use Finance::Quote) as soon as I click on the finish tab the CPU utilization goes to 100% and the program stops working.

In addition the online source box is blank.
