Bug Description

When I close the lid on my laptop (Acer Aspire One) it doesn't suspend -- simply turns off the screen.

I expect this to get closed quickly, as I have zero technical knowledge and can't tell you what package it was found in.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. Just wanted to report on how hilarious this has been. First I'm told I'm wrong, then I'm told I'm right, then I'm told it's a dupe and to take a hike.

Thanks, but I'm going back to Windows.

Oh and by the way, my laptop sleeps/resumes fine when I tell it to do so from the keystroke shortcut or the GUI menu. Closing the *lid* doesn't work.

Great work, Sherlock Duplicate.

I'm sorry that this bug has been ping-ponged around, but everyone's trying to find the right location for this bug. Duplicate does not mean take a hike, it means that we are trying to bring together all the information from different reporters in order to process the 300+ open bugs in gnome-power-manager. Bugs with many duplicates and comments will get more attention than those without, and we'd appreciate it if you could continue working with the bug report if duplicated.

However, you are correct - the bug it is listed as a duplicate deals with resuming from suspend, not suspending itself. Therefore, it should not be a duplicate.

Please remember that myself and nearly all developers and bug triagers in Ubuntu are volunteers doing this in their spare time. If you see a mistake, please be courteous. For example, "I do not believe that the bug is a duplicate since it deals with resume from suspend." would have been an effective message to reopen this bug.

We should perform the following steps to further debug this problem:
1) Test in Karmic Koala, a liveCD should suffice: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/. This is because gnome-power-manager has gone through significant changes since Jaunty. (HAL has be removed and replaced with devicekit-power, and version 2.24 of GPM is now 2.27.5 in Karmic.)
2) If the bug exists in Karmic, while running Karmic type into the terminal:
apport-collect 400097
3) In Karmic, follow debugging instructions at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingGNOMEPowerManager, specifically the sections on:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingGNOMEPowerManager#Getting%20info%20from%20GPM
and
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingGNOMEPowerManager#Getting%20DBUS%20info

Since GPM can suspend and resume, this is most likely a linux problem, and am assigning to linux (Ubuntu). Marking as incomplete since we need the above information.

Please reopen this bug. I have my Power Management settings set to "Suspend" when the lid is closed for both AC and Battery - neither works in 9.04UNR. I have an Acer Aspire One D250.

I tried Karmic alpha4, and had the pleasure of submitting a crash report for the launcher before testing the suspend bug. :-}
It turns out that the suspend-on-lid-close still didn't work.

I didn't follow steps 2 & 3 from comment 5 yet. I can't say when I'll be able to do so.

Thank you,
David

I agree this bug should remain open. The problem is that you should be able to follow the steps in comment #8, but if you do follow those steps, it doesn't work.

@David: when you test this bug, make sure you upgrade gnome-power-manager to the latest version first (through apt-get or synaptic) since there have been some recent bug fixes. Thanks!

I have the same issue on my Dell Latitude D820, running Karmic which was up to date as of this morning. My system was upgraded from Jaunty, where it worked fine. I still have gnome-power-manager set to suspend when lid is closed while on battery, but it does not work. I can suspend by pressing the power button (which brings up a dialog) or by using the menu.

Oh also, I am using xscreensaver, and removed gnome-screensaver. There are power management options in the advanced settings panel of xscreensaver, though I have tried this with power management both enabled and disabled in xscreensaver. I don't know if this is relevant but thought I would mention it.

OK maybe I spoke too soon.

I just tried to suspend by closing the lid and it failed again. I had to suspend following ctrl-alt-del. So this is an intermittent problem now. Never had this issue with 9.04.

A small addendum: the problem disappears when I'm on battery power, and reappears when I plug in. In other words: my chosen setting for lid close in g-p-m are honored when I'm not plugged in, not honored otherwise (always just blanks the screen).

FWIW, I am no longer affected by this bug on 10.10 netbook. I had upgraded my AOD250's BIOS from v1.03 to v1.27 for another power management bug 401944, which may have corrected this problem also.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

You are amazing guys, this bug persisted for 3 years, and I changed 2 laptops allready and I do not use Ubuntu anymore because of ubuntified-drivers and other stuff. Anyway I would recommend you to focus on hardware support for linux kernel and make a good contribution for that, instead of releasing new ubuntified-desktops which indeed is hard to compare with gnome3. you would acheved more if you had contributed to gnome3 and linux kernel. Now it looks like "yet another windows" under different flag

Thank you for your question.

To answer it, I haven't been able to reproduce this bug since I switched to
OS X. I am still unable to reproduce under OS X 10.6.7.

Keep up the good work!

I'm trying out the 11.10 Beta and my system won't suspend on lid close anymore. Used to work fine with the previous stable release. This isn't a clean install, but and upgrade from version 11.04, so it may have something to do with that. I'll try a live image as soon as I can to confirm this issue. The problem is that I can't seem to find the option to make it suspend on lid close anywhere so I don't even know if it's supposed to be enabled or not. Using the key to suspend works fine.
System is Asus Eee PC1000H, 2GB Ram with the last BIOS that was released for this model (2204).
