Bug Description

Since upgrading to Dapper, I've noticed a strange behavior with bookmarks.

It happens in both KDE and Gnome.
It happens with both the Ubuntu Firefox 1.5 and the Mozilla Firefox 1.5.

When I first start Firefox and navigate to a bookmark folder, the first entry in the folder is the word "empty." After I choose a real entry and then go back to bookmarks, the word "empty" no longer appears for that folder. It will, however, appear in each of the other subfolders until I pick a real bookmark from one of those.

For the rest of that session, "empty" will no longer appear in folders I've selected from.

If I close Firefox and re-open it, though, the problem will appear anew.

Can't reproduce. I'm not sure what you mean by "choose a real entry". Also, what GTK style I you using when in KDE?

Yeah, I don't know how to reproduce it, as it just showed up when I
upgraded to Dapper. It wasn't happening in Breezy.

The best way to describe it is through a screenshot (see attached).

The "empty" entry is circled in red. A "real" entry is circled in green.

I don't think I'm using a Gtk style in KDE. I think I'm just using Plastik.

This bug happens in Gnome as well, though, regardless of what Gtk theme
I use (I've tried Clearlooks, RPanther3, Human).

Sorry, my last post was by email, so I tried to attach an image.

I tried a couple of things, too. I tried logging in as another user. I also tried using a fresh Firefox profile (~/.mozilla), and even with the fresh profile, the problem persists:

Do you have any Firefox extensions installed ?

Ian.

Well, the bug occurred even with a fresh profile, so, in essence, no.

Please close this bug, though. I appear to be the only one who had this problem, and I just did a reinstall of Dapper, and it went away. Thanks for your time.

Well, I guess one other person experienced this a year ago:

I found out how to reproduce it!

So the bug disappeared when I did a clean reinstall of Dapper Kubuntu.

Once I added the Ubuntu-Desktop metapackage, the problem came back. Once I removed Ubuntu-Desktop (and all the accompanying packages), the problem went away again.

It has something to do with the combination of Ubuntu and Kubuntu.

Another user on the Ubuntu Forums helped me figure out how to reproduce the bug.

Apparently, the "empty" entry problem appears when you activate the Assistive Technology Support in System > Preferences.

If you can find a way to have the Assistive Technology Support enabled but without this "empty" entry in Firefox problem, that'd be great.

I experienced this bug in Feisty. I can confirm that disabling Assistive Technology Support makes it go away.

Yes, and it seems the method to trigger it is still similar. I once tried the 'assistive technologies' menu, and has regretted it every since :-) After doing that, to reproduce the bug:

1. Start a freash firefox-3

2. Go directly to the bookmarks menu and click on it. It will open a bookmark dialog instead of opening the menu. This is slightly different than the original description of this bug, simply because firefox changed.

It is somewhat random: say it happens 90% of the time.

rydberg, I cannot confirm that for intrepid. When you wrote your last message (2008-11-18) firefox version was 3.0.3+nobinonly-0ubuntu2, now it is 3.0.5+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.10.1. Can you try it with the latest version? Thanks in advance.

I don't think this has to do with orca specifically, but just the assistive technologies support. Please try without any actual assistive technologies running, but still with assistive technologies enabled, and feel free to re-enable this task if this only happens with orca running.

we have reached EOLS for 2.0
This could be related to lack of QT support.
Can you please install firefox-gnome-support and see if it happens with and/or without it.
