Bug Description

Upon installing Ubuntu 9.10 from a recent CD, Karmic Koala works ok. When
I use the sudo apptitude safe upgrade, the following happens. First, a large number
of updates are downloaded and installed. Second, when 9.10 (updated) is started for
the first time, GRUB does the loading, the graphic progress bar completes itself,
and the graphic login screen appears. I enter my ID, then password, the screen goes
blank, a very short duration of an 8 to 10 line command line notice appears, and
finally the graphic login re-appears. This cycle continues with no successful graphic login.
My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5315-2153 with upgraded 2 Gb RAM.

The sudo aptitude safe is not the only update that causes the repeat login screen.

It also occurs with the graphic update manager.

Can anybody help me capture the 8 line error message after the login screen flashes off?

I hope it is something like Control F-2 or something like that, and I could write those
command line entries down to include on the bug report.

not sure if this is the same problem i have:

9.10 alpha 6 x64

when i login i see the progress bar like it is going to load. the screen goes blank and then i am returned to the login screen. it may be the same as the original bug but i dont see anything on the screen refresh.

when using the live cd the progress bar would fill and then restart. something tells me its an ati problem. i originally tried to dist-update a spare kubuntu install on the machine i just booted to a blank screen.

some (possibly) useful pc specs:

ati radeonhd (forget exact model) on a dual head
processor: amd phenom x64

i also operate a dual linux boot with a separate shared home partition

to the original poster: try looking in the logs with a live cd. not sure where they would be located. im sure one of the debugging guys can help you out with that.

if you need more info or want me to file a new bug please let me know. karmic seems very nice from the live cd i ran on a vm. i just want it to work when it becomes a final release :)

Similar (same?) problem. Running Karmic x64:
- Login window appears
- Put in password, hit enter
- Looks like it is loading, but returns me to login

This will happen anywhere from 3-10+ times before it logs me in. It isn't an auth failure as I deliberately entered in wrong credentials and that shows up as auth failure. This just drops me back without any error.

I don't have the same problem.

This just started for me a couple of weeks ago. If I then log into KDE then back to gnome I can get in.
Frustrated!

Any ideas?

Same problem,
I am facing this problem just after reinstalling Ubuntu's file manager Nautilus.

I am using Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.32.31-generic

- Login window appears
- Put in password, hit enter
- Looks like it is loading, but returns me to login screen
- If I enter wrong password intentionally it shows Authentication failure

And in command mode shows :

* Speech dispatches configured for user sessions
* Starting the Winbind daemon Winbind
* Starting common Unix Printing System : cupsd
* PulseAudio configured for peer user sessions
* Enabling additional executable binary formats binfmt support
* Checking battery state...

after this I am totally hanged nothing goes further, please help me..

Thanks in advance,
Roshan
