unable to login

Acer 5715z / testing Karmic

started up my laptop a moment ago and i was unable to log in. i am able to enter my name and password, then it will start up, getting close to the point where you can see the desktop being formed, then the screen blinks/turns black and jumps back to the login screen.

managed to get in using the window maker to send out this bug report.

I filed this bug as a boot failure, but it's exactly the same thing on my Lenovo laptop with an Intel 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphic Controller.

I also have a desktop (Emachine) with a Karmic partition. It boots up, but hangs for quite a while with a black screen until the login screen eventually appears. This started to happen after recent updates.
