Bug Description

Binary package hint: jython

Jython 2.5 now has a final release with *many* new features. This package should be updated to use the latest Jython.

Yes, I agree. I'm having to install the version on their site for now, but isn't that what a packaging system is supposed to do, not have us install "raw" versions, enabling easy installation/removal/upgrades, etc? Can someone create a deb, even if it is not maintained by Canonical? They seem a bit slow to include stuff. Thanks!

Please! This is very old and won't run most Python code in Ubuntu and elsewhere, which requires version 2.3.

Is Debian also stuck on this old version?

Lucid is out, and were still on really old Jython 2.2.1 at this rate, we'll be asking for 2.6 soon.

I really hope the maintainers will update it in Lucid...we are ages behind...

heya,

Yeah, me as well.

Trying to install django-python, seems to require distutils, which is a standard part of Jython 2.5.

It seems a bit ridiculous how outdated this is - Jython 2.2.1 was released back in 2007. And as other people point out, it doesn't work with a lot of things today. *sigh* It's a bit sad to see Ubuntu lagging behind like this.

Cheers,
Victor

heya,

Hmm, it says fix released above, on 2010-07-12.

However, as of today (2010-08-04), nearly three weeks later, on Ubuntu Maverick, I just checked "aptitude show jython", and it still shows Jython 2.2.1-2.1ubuntu1.

And http://packages.ubuntu.com seems to show Jython 2.2.1-2ubuntu4 for Lucid, but the Maverick package search seems broken ("Error
more than one suite specified for show_static (dapper dapper-updates dapper-backports hardy hardy-updates hardy-backports intrepid intrepid-updates intrepid-backports jaunty jaunty-updates jaunty-backports karmic karmic-updates karmic-backports lucid)").

Anyhow, can we get some more information on what version exactly it was updated to, and when this might actually start appearing in repositories?

Cheers,
Victor

Either way, it's apparently stuck at 2.2.1

when jython itself is now at 2.5.2 it's kind of slack, looks as though we'll have to download jython directly for now - although I'll be looking into repackaging the .deb rather than waiting for the debian maintainers :-)

The "Fix Released" announcement is for the Debian version (upstream).

If you're desperate for Jython 2.5, the Debian unstable version may work ( http://packages.debian.org/sid/jython ), although you also need the updated antlr3 from sid, and I had some issues trying to get it to run some code which worked in Jython 2.2 (I can't say for sure whether this was caused by package incompatibilities or language changes)
