Bug Description

Most people use a single user, and do not want to enter their password when booting their computer : they just want to use it. This the reason why making the "Automatic login" option the default choice during install would be nice.

I believe this could be considered a paper cut because, at the moment, the user must explicitly seek out the 'Login Window' in the System menu and navigate to the unlikely 'Security' tab.

This slows down the time needed to bring up a usable system and makes the user type username > enter > password > enter.

Unless there is a use case for automatic login (on the local machine) effecting security, I see no adverse reason not to include this.

Hi,
I don't like this idea. Users (especially) business people like secure system. Using no-password by default could impress Ubuntu is not save operating system. Many people like to have userid/password on single-person computer. I like to have it, I can access my bank account from browser, so I don't like to have automatic login.

I also don't think this is "paper-cut" bug, this is new default security settings.

Hi, Grofaty... Here's my argument : I did not recommend using *no password*, but *allowing people not to type their password when login*. This means their password would still remain applicable when sudoing : the system is not left without protection... My recommendation addressesthe case of people who use Ubuntu @home, who have Windows Xp as a reference, and don't mind about security risks linked to physical access to their station. Business people will probably have their PCs installed by qualified people, who will only have to tick the checkbox during the install...

Actually , during Jaunty install it offers Automatic login for the user, [This is a very clear option during the user setup]
there is no reason to make it default.

Also to be noted is that Yann's observations are from an Intrepid to Jaunty UPGRADE.

Unless the process has changed in the Karmic installer , this is NOT a paperCut

Changed in hundredpapercuts:
