Bug Description

like a game...I am new to using Linux, only been in it for about 6 months, but I do love the stability over windoze (HA!).

Anyways one thing I do miss in windows is the use of the windows key + d to drop out of a full screen game to the desktop. So i can run another application and then return to my game.

Ubuntu uses a different shortcu to show the desktopt: ctrl-alt-d.

You can change to use windows key+d under 'System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts' and scroll until you find 'Hide all windows and show the desktop background'.

Does that solve your problem?

no it does not, tested in nwn 1. The only thing that does what I want is to hold the power button down. not an ideal solution in my opinion as you hold it to long and the system can turn off. I have also tired....

ctrl + alt + esc
alt + esc
ctrl + esc
ctrl + right arrow
ctrl + alt + right arrow
alt + right arrow
ctrl + d
alt + d
ctrl + alt + d

...and I think I'm missing one other I found

ctrl-alt+d should hide all windows and show the desktop. What games/applications in fullscreen is this not working for you?

Bug #12153 proves me wrong. You cannot use win+<key> for any keyboard shortcut - for the moment.

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. Unfortunately a paper cut should be a small usability issue that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. I'm afraid this bug can't be addressed as part of this project. This is a feature request, and would not improve general usability of the default Ubuntu 9.10 experience for most users.

It'd be really nice to have Ctrl+Alt combinations work in fullscreen applications. This way I can connect to a Windows server using tsclient and have this application run fullscreen in workspace 3, use VirtualBox to run a virtual machine in fullscreen on workspace 4, run other applications on workspace 1 and 2 and be able to switch between these workspaces using the Ctrl+Alt keys and the arrow keys. Now I have to run tsclient in windowed mode, because there's no way to get out of tsclient when in full screen mode.

It'd also be nice to have a button to minimize tsclient or Virtualbox when in full screen mode, like the yellow bar on top of Microsofts Remote Desktop Client.

this also bothers me.. this and a few other failed 'paper cuts' reports which do seriously effect usability should maybe be converted and addressed as normal bugs rather than simply marked as invalid and forgotten?

It's an invalid *paper cut*, the bug report is still alive and well.

Patrick, I marked this as affecting tsclient. If you can think of other applications affected by this bug, can you please update the report? Thank you.

It was impossible to minimize VirtualBox. Since VirtualBox 3.0.2 it's possible to minimize a virtual machine, because they added a bar with a minimize button (like the one used in Microsofts Remote Desktop Client). As this bug report is about minimizing a full screen application, VirtualBox can be considered as fixed.

Though it'd be nice if short cuts like Ctrl + Alt + Arrow Keys worked. Now, if you're working in a virtual machine (on workspace 2) and want to use an Ubuntu (on workspace 1) and then switch back to your virtual machine, you have to do the following:
- Minimize virtual machine by clicking the button on the yellow bar in your virtual machine;
- Switch to workspace 1;
- Use the application;
- Switch back to workspace 1;
- Click the button of the virtual machine in your window list to get the virtual machine back to full screen.

It'd be better if Ctrl + Alt + Arrow Keys should just work, so you could do:
- Ctrl + Alt + Left Arrow to get to workspace 1 without minimizing the virtual machine;
- Use the application on workspace 1;
- Ctrl + Alt + Right Arrow to get back to workspace 2 which still has the virtual machine open in full screen.

On Mac OS this works (although it's key combination is Ctrl + Arrow Keys, instead of Ctrl + Alt + Arrow Keys).

If this would work in full screen application, it'd fix this bug for all applications.

Nowadays full screen mode in tsclient is completely useless, as there's no way to get out of this full screen mode. Only solution is logging of from the Windows machine, use the application on Ubuntu and then logging back on to the Windows machine. If Ubuntu short cuts would work in full screen, you could just switch to another workspace with Ctrl + Alt + Arrow Keys or minimize a full screen application with Alt + F9. Then it'd be fixed for all applications and also for all games.

You can switch in tsclient between Full Screen and Window mode by pressing Ctrl + Alt + [Enter]. At least you can in ver 0.150. I use it all the time, so I can switch between Terminal Server sessions.

You can also switch in VirtualBox between Full Screen and Window mode by pressing what they call the host key (default is the right Ctrl key) + F. I'm using ver 3.0.6 r52128. If that combination doesn't work, you will need to look in your VirtualBox preferences for the key that is defined as the "Host Key".

With all of that said, I too would like the to use Ctrl + Alt + [ARROW] to view another desktop while a tsclient session is full screen. I've tried checking "Enable window manager's key bindings" in the "Performance" tab, that seems to allow you to switch desktops (the visual indicator that the desktop switched displays), but the full screen session goes with you. Also, after a few switches the indicator no longer appears.

I hope that you find this helpful.
