Bug Description

On some mouse devices, I find my self too easily creating a new folder, when I click the right mouse button. I've attached a photo of what I mean. Would a gap between mouse pointer and right-click menu help? Or perhaps disabling the ability of the right mouse button of selecting items from the right-click menu? This is a usability issue, because an option from the menu should not be automatically highlighted and ready for selection.

The problem arises when we use an older mouse. I have one such mouse where the right button has gotten a little clogged up. As a result, one has to press it more firmly then normal and because of this, I end up often creating a new folder by mistake.

you could say that's from any action or menu item that's not a bug

I see this as a 'paper cut' because its a usability issue that can easily be fixed. For example, If I were to right-click on a webpage inside Firefox, it does not cause any problems because the mouse pointer is not automatically selecting something from the menu. But if I was to right-click anywhere in nautilus or on my desktop, the 'create folder' or 'properties' is automatically selected. So it is very easy to click it by mistake, especially if you have a bit of a sticky mouse button.

I like the way its done in firefox; there is an initial gap between the mouse pointer and the right-click menu.

I believe that this is valid as a 'paper-cut' as it is a usability issue which can be easily fixed.

you suggest that the first menu item is too easy to trigger in any context menu when using buggy hardware, what change would solve that then?

There would be a lot of people who have input hardware which is slightly sticky. Moreover, you don't even need the mouse to be buggy....it depends on the firmness of the button. Not everyone uses a standard Logitech or Microsoft mouse. There are a whole range of mice out there with different quality of buttons. Ubuntu/Gnome/Nautilus should be designed according to what people use, not what they 'should' use. Plus I don't have this problem when doing a right-click within web pages in firefox, so it is something that can easily be fixed.

My mouse is an Evoluent Vertical mouse which cost me over £60. Its an ergonomic mouse which is very expensive to replace. When click right mouse button, why should an item from the menu be already highlighted?

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. Unfortunately a paper cut should be a small usability issue that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. I'm afraid this bug can't be addressed as part of this project.

As you point out , this is a hardware specific issue, not what the majority of users have. Hence it is not a papercut.

A paper cut is a minor usability annoyance that an average user would encounter on his/her first day of using a new installation of Ubuntu 9.10.

For further info about papercuts criteria , pls read > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut

Don't worry though, This bug has been marked as "invalid" ONLY in the papercuts project.

For resolution of the bug, kindly identify the projects affected and assign the bug to that project, otherwise the devs of the concerned project might not be notified of this problem. For more about finding the right package> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.

I have checked with Windows XP and KDE and neither have this issue; when right clicking, nothing is automatically highlighted and ready for selection. So I believe this to be a gnome specific issue which does not provide any benefit to the end user, but can be an annoyance. It is wrong to assume that everyone would be using brand new input devices.

Actually, this happens on every system I've used, with older AND brand new mice, as well as trackpads.
But I can see how this could be too difficult to fix as a papercut.
By the way, this happens on nearly every gtk software.

@ danielTo say that this happens with 'every' system, is just not true. Just click the right mouse button in Windows, KDE or Openbox and this behaviour doesn't happen; nothing is automatically selected. I have not tried Apple OSX or XFCE environments, however. This is actually only a problem with Gnome. If you try this in firefox, it doesn't happen, so its not that it can't be easily fixed.

This does not happen in systems which have the old .gnome , .gnome2 , .config files ,
I tested this in a fresh install, this problem is not hardware specific.

This is due to gnome settings > "The default menu positioning function will position the menu at the current mouse cursor position. " > http://library.gnome.org/devel/gtk/unstable/GtkMenu.html#gtk-menu-popup

This doesn not happen in firefox , which solves this issue by opening the menu a few pixels below or above the pointer, so no option is selected.

The fix needs to be in nautilus alone...

Unfortunately i could not find this bug initially , a similar bug , Bug #410636 , has been Triaged.
I'm marking this as a dup of the latest one. you can follow the progress on Bug #410636
