Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

Using the latest release of firefox and a fully updated Jaunty install, I have found firefox to freeze so often that the system is unusable. It happened when Jaunty first came out so I downgraded to Ibex, but when I reupgraded to jaunty the problem remains. I have tried to use firefox in safe mode, with no plugins or addons, but the problem persists. I am using an hp dv6000 with 1gb ram, dual core AMD Turion TL-50 800 mhz processor, and the latest gnome version/kernel. The problem doesn't seem to intersect with any particular action, except that it happens more often when I just closed one page and another one is loading.

Update: the same thing happens using a number of other browsers including Midori, Epiphany, Galeon

Not possible. The entire system locks up when it happens, unless there are
other log files that I could go into.

Could you please start firefox with strace and when you reboot attach
the strace log?
Thanks.

Your problem appears to be that you are trying to load 32 bit realplayer. Are you on a 64 bit system? Did you manually install realplayer on your system?

Oh, is that what elfclass means? I am on a 64 bit system but did not
manually install realplayer. I already removed realplayer but the problem
consisted. The new strace said something about the Canberra libs. I'll
post that new strace up here for you to look at later, once I'm on the right
computer.

I have these some remnant files from my realplayer install which point to a similar place as yours, please run:
locate nphelix
remove any files in:
/usr/lib/firefox/plugins
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

There was a new version of Firefox 3 that was just released. Could you please try it and let us know if that solves the problem?
