Bug Description

On a Dell Latitude E6400 with the E-Port Dockingstation, I'm getting sound if speakers are plugged into the headphone jack (hpj) of the docking station, but the built-in speakers are neither automatically disabled (no jack-sensing working there) nor do I see how I could do that manually. So sound is blasting out of the built-in speakers and the ones attached to the docking station.
I have four volume sliders available: Master, Headphone, PCM and Front. Headphone controls the built-in hpj, Front controls the built-in speakers and hpj of the docking station.
I checked whether some switch (e.g. IEC958, whatever that is) would do the trick, but nothing worked.

This problem also affects me. Moreover, if I boot with the headphones plugged in, then the speakers don't come on. However, if I unplug the headphones the speakers remain off.

I've updated to the latest ALSA driver.

I don't think that this is an ALSA problem; I've ditched Ubuntu and moved to Kubuntu (9.04) and my sound now works fine.

Probably this is a dupe from bug #410769 or bug #412807

Can you test the workaround described there?

also please execute from a terminal

pavucontrol lists two ports: "Analog Output" (which gives sound on the headphone jack of the docking station as well as the internal speakers of the notebook) and "Analog Headphones" (which gives sound on the internal headphone jack of the notebook, no sound on the internal speakers or the headphone jack of the docking station, even if there is nothing plugged into the internal headphone jack of the notebook).
I can't select only the internal speakers or only the headphone jack of the docking station, either both output sound or neither do.

ok, so it seems to be a variant of the forementioned bugs. The docking station makes it behave diferently.

The update unfortunately doesn't fix it, the behaviour is the same as in comment #26.

Bug 387866 seems to describe the lack of separate control from external (docking station) versus internal speakers (as does this bug report) and a general lack of sound on the headphone jack of the docking station, which I don't experience. IIRC, there was a moment in 9.04 development where the headphone jack of the docking station didn't work at all, but the last time I checked it was producing sound in 9.04, just not offering the option to disable the internal speakers or doing it automatically.
