Bug Description

Binary package hint: tomboy

Using 9.04 I get an OAFIID:error with Tomboy on most, but not all, boots. The work around for me has been to leave one note open at shutdown then Tomboy loads normally.

This is probably a known bug, fixed in Tomboy 0.14.2, but it's hard to tell without a stack trace. The only good way to get one right now is to look in ~/.xsession-errors after the crash, I think. If you can do that it would be pretty helpful, so we can find out if it's a new bug or a fixed one.

I keep pinging Ubuntu folks about shipping a 0.14.2 update, and supposedly it will happen any day now.

Attached: .xsession-errors.

Tomboy 0.14.0 started up with an error again today.

The Tomboy search window opens after the error message is closed.

Ubuntu updates are current but 0.14.2 is not in the updates yet.

After this there is no Tomboy icon in the panel.

Sounds like you have Tomboy in your panel and in your gnome session startup programs. In other words, you are trying to start it twice when you log in, which is not supported.

I'd recommend either removing Tomboy from your panel (keeping in it in GNOME session startup programs, and it will run in your notification area), or keeping it in the panel and removing it from the GNOME session startup programs.

Then log out and back in and see if you still get the error.

There is no entry for Tomboy in the Startup Applications window.

If the applet crashed with he OAFIID error, but the Tomboy search window still appeared, then you were taking some other action to launch Tomboy. I assumed it was via the GNOME Session. Not sure what else it would be, unless you have some other custom startup stuff, or other processes that would for some reason cause Tomboy to start.

You're still getting the applet crash *and* the search window?

It is not very consistent. I will send another log when it happens again.
There are no other processes that I know of that could be launching Tomboy.
I will try removing it from the panel and see what happens then. Thanks.

I had the same thing happen to me when I switched my GNOME preferences to include "Automatically remember running applications when logging out." This option had not been a problem for me in 8.10 and before, but it is now for Tomboy.

With this option set the icon moves from the left side of the panel (where I keep my shortcuts) to the right side (notification area). It is clearly not loading in the same way as before I set the "Auto remember" option, and appears to be loading twice (once in notification and then the panel instance fails). When the icon appears in the notification area I can use it as I have before (click and notes are listed). When I quit that instance, the icon automatically appears back on the left side of the panel where it should be.

Okay, this is probably an artifact of http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=533537 .

I was just about to open a bug for this problem when I bump into this report. As said by @EmmaJane, this happens when gnome-sessions is set to restore the previously running applications.

This is still happening in 15.5 (karmic version, I hope apport-collect has attached all the necessary info).
I have attached the file generated by gnome-session (located in "~/.config/gnome-session/saved-session/").

same problem. Occures when you enable "TimeStamps" and previous notes hasnt it.

The upstream bug I mentioned earlier was fixed in Tomboy 0.15.7, and I think this bug can probably be closed, though it would be nice if bug reporters could see if the problem persists for them in 0.15.7.

mealstrom, I really doubt that your problem is caused by enabling the Insert Timestamp add-in. Can you give exact steps to reproduce?

On my system this error comes up at random intervals, like this morning and
the icon does not load into the panel. Other than the loading problem the
app seems to work fine. There does not appear to be anything specific that
triggers the message it just happens at some boot ups. It may be a timing
issue with other loading apps or services.

Wilbur, what version of Tomboy are you using? I am fairly certain it is fixed in 0.15.7, which is in Karmic.

You are probably right. I have just been using the Ubuntu updates (Synaptic
Package Manager) and the version it has installed is 0.14.0. I am just about
to download the later version now. I did not realize that the automatic
updates in Ubuntu would be so far behind. Good lesson.

Well, 0.15.7 is a development release, which is why it's only in
Karmic. If you're upgrading, it does have one irritating bug (fixed
in upcoming release) where if you have Tomboy in your panel as an
applet (like everyone in this bug seems to), and you open the Search
window, Tomboy crashes. Fair warning ;-)

Thanks for the warning. I have become used to this bug and it only crops up
now and then so "no worries" for the moment. I only turned in the report to
let the developers know what I encountered. All the best....
