Bug Description

I attach a small document I created which when loaded into OpenOffice Calc is unreasonably slow even for simply moving the cursor around between spreadsheet cells in columns C, D, and E. Similarly, if you are viewing another OpenOffice document and you click to bring this document to focus, it takes far too long before the document is actually responsive.

To reproduce:
1. Open attached document
2. Click cell C5
3. Click down arrow and observe how long it takes to get to the cell below
4. Click down arrow a few more times. I can see that it allows only about 1 per second

To contrast:
1. Open attached document
2. Click cell B5
3. Click down arrow and observe how long it takes to get to the cell below
4. Click down arrow a few more times. I can see that it is very quick

There seems to be something about the data in the range C5 through E80 that makes performance very slow.

Some other behaviours:

1. Open attached document
2. Pop its window down
3. Open another document and do some work in there
4. Now click the popped down document
5. The window comes up, but it takes about 8 seconds before you can see anything in the document

I'm using OpenOffice.org 3.0.1 OOO300m15 (Build:9379) under an up-to-date Jaunty.

Hi Kurt,

You changed the status to incomplete....just wondering which bit is
incomplete about it?

Hi, David,

Perhaps Incomplete is the wrong status -- there isn't a status that maps neatly to "requesting more information." I've changed it back to New.

Kurt

Oh, I see what happened. My questions didn't get saved. :-\

I did not have an slowness moving around in and manipulating the attached spreadsheet. Are all documents slow, or just this one? Was it slow in earlier versions of OpenOffice or in previous Ubuntu releases?

I've updated the description to be more specific - can you see any slowness in the actions I've described?

I don't see this problem on another machine running Ubuntu 8.10 and OO 2.4

Neither do I see this problem on windows with OO 3.0 or 3.1 on Windows, with the same document.

I see this problem on Ubuntu Jaunty running OO 3.1, with both the open source, and closed source nvidia video drivers.

Do you still have this problem with the new version of OOo in the ppa at https://launchpad.net/~openoffice-pkgs/+archive ?

I can not reproduce the slow down in Karmic which has OOo 3.1.0 as in the ppa.

Hi,

I'm having the exact same issue.

To give an idea of the performance, I downloaded this document:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/21459319/Vocab.ods
(found in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/313993)

I selected cell A1 and started spinning the mouse wheel to see how long it would take me to scroll through the 372 lines of the document. I kept the wheel spinning to make sure there would be no gap in input (this later turned out to be overly ambitious as I had the document still scrolling after 15 minutes). It took exactly 90 seconds for me to see line 372. At the top of the window I saw line 336. It seems Calc jumps 3 lines when using the wheel, making for 112 screen redraws. That's roughly 0.8 secs per redraw. Together with the fact that X jumped to roughly 85 percent CPU usage during this, I would say it's probably related to a problem with the hardware acceleration. I have made sure it's enabled in the Options, and it is. I also did the same test with it disabled, and the results were the same. I also tried all variantions of font antialiasing - no changes in performance in any combination.

I should note that I am sure I have a working graphics card, I know this as I stumbled into some problems with it a while back and ran the XFIX procedure during startup, which solved it nicely and gave me my hardware acceleration back. I'm running an up-to-date Jaunty.

I did try the suggestion above and installed OOo 3.1.0 in the ppa. Absolutely no change at all.

I'll be glad to try things and report on my configuration if I can just get suggestions and instructions.

Best regards,
Fredrik

Do you still have this problem on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid)? I can't reproduce this issue with either of the supplied files on my system using Intel 4500 graphics, which should be much slower than nvidia.
