I experienced the same thing on my T42 Thinkpad. Touchpad, trackpoint, and a USB mouse I plugged in after logging in all do not work (neither movements nor button presses are registered).

This appears to have something to do with the 2.6.30 kernel, as I am still able to use the mouse fine if I use the 2.6.28 kernel.

Confirming with Dell usb keyboard and mouse. The system believes it has a Macintosh mouse, the mouse does not react at all, the keyboard does. I replaced the mouse by a targus optical mouse, which, apart from being perversly pink, works very well.

I updated from Jaunty to Karmic today (using update-manager -c -d -p). My mouse is not working Dell Optical now either.

I switched back to the previous kernel where the mouse was working and that did fix the problem. I also tried the xorg.conf generated by xorg -configure (which tries the "mouse" driver instead of evdev) and installed the xorg-input-driver-mouse package and set AllowEmptyInput to true in ServerLayout. That didn't help either. For now I have to use keyboard as mouse..

I've also tried gpm and it doesn't appear to be working. Maybe something udev or hal related? Nor does "cat /dev/input/mice" which in the past has shown data/junk when you move the mouse.

catting /dev/input/mice works again too.. That would imply kernel. But switching back to an older kernel didn't resolve the problem for me.. odd.

here are a few more package versions that may be related:

I can confirm that this (remove 'quiet splash') fixed my problem.

I confirm the bug with Logitech V550 Nano wireless mouse, after upgrading to Karmic Beta 1.
Catting /dev/input/mice does work.

Sometimes the mouse works after plugging the receiver into another port, this happens randomly.

The mouse worked without any problems on Jaunty with kernels 2.6.28, 2.6.30 and 2.6.31.

There are no InputDevice sections in my xorg.conf.

I attach the lsusb and three Xorg log fragments: one from boot, which does not handle the mouse, one for when the mouse is being detected randomly, and one from Jaunty, when the mouse was working.

Did an upgrade from Jaunty to Karmic Koala - PS2 mouse worked fine in Jaunty, just disappeared in 9.10. However, for a newly created user, no problem, user has mouse in desktop session. But for any previously created users on the system, there is just no mouse. When starting Nautilus from the terminal, I get my mouse again, and I can use it normally. To make sure it is not a theme problem, I reverted to default Ubuntu theme...but still no mouse, except when doing the workaround with terminal / nautilus.

I guess that for me it's related to the video controller (Brookdale): - when putting resolution as low as 640 x 480, mouse appears again. Of course this is not a workable video resolution.

I had this problem too, but I fixed it by re-installing GRUB. I had previously installed GRUB on another partition a few weeks before upgrading to Karmic, and because of that, my computer kept booting into the old kernel instead of the new one. It also fixed some other problems I was having with Karmic.
