on the upload image popup screen element, the "Add image" control doesn't show at all.

Hi,
  Could you please explain what you mean by can't upload pics? I was able to insert images into txt documents and also upload and create image files. Please provide more specifics.

The problem was with adding images into googlesites (while editing my hosted
pages).
However, the interface seems to have changed since, and uploading is now OK
again.

The problem is now resolved, as per my understanding, the bug was not in firefox, but with the interface on Google's side.
