Setup video mode not supported by Dell LCD display

Bug Description

Look, I don't know what package it is, if it is one at
all, but your form *requires* that one be chosen, which
is not very well thought out.

Well, I didn't get far with the testing. This is for Dapper
Drake flight 6. Whatever video mode it kicks into just
into installation, or just into verifying the CD, is not supported
by the Dell 2005FPW LCD monitor. The monitor just
goes blank after starting the kernel except for a self-generated
message "DVI mode not supported."

It does, however, work with a Dell 2405FPW LCD monitor.
Unfortunately Dell monitors are too mentally retarded to inform
the user what the mode they're running in is.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Whatever video 10 SUSE 10.0 uses for installation works fine.

The video board is a Radeon X600 "hypermemory."

I'm having trouble also with the Dell 2005FPW on a PowerPC MacMini DVI (ATI Radeon 9200), but not during the installation process (the monitor worked fine with the Flight CD6 installer defaults). I'm having difficulties with xserver-xorg, even after updating Dapper with latest package versions.

With "UseFBDev" enabled, the mode 1680x1050x60Hz is selected but the screen doesn't look fine: there are horitzontal broken lines along the screen (surprisingly, the mouse pointer appears ok, but the rest of the screen isn't).

If "UseFBDev" is disabled, the screen resolution magically becomes 840x1050x60Hz (sic).

FYI, it seems that this is a DVI related issue. When using the DVI-to-VGA adapter, the screen resolution is correct.

(You can actually leave the package name empty, but the bug tracking system doesn't make this obvious at all. This is bug 31638.)

Hi guys we won't be able to do much about this with the current info, so please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /etc/X11/xorg.conf cheers.

The Xorg.0.log as requested... Please, those are the lines with an error:

(WW) ****INVALID IO ALLOCATION**** b: 0xf0000400 e: 0xf00004ff correcting^G
(EE) end of block range 0xefffffff < begin 0xf0000000

The out of range warnings for non-native screen resolutions can be ignored, because the same xorg.conf (attached below) works with the DVI-to-VGA converter.

This is the xorg.conf that fails with DVI but works fine with DVI-to-VGA converter.

While trying to install Kubuntu Flight 7 to AMD64 (dual core) with ATI Radeon and Dell 2005FPW LCD monitor using DVI connector at both ends:

1) Boot from CD/DVD begins correctly and everything looks "normal" (Kubuntu splash with progress bar displays correctly).

2) When system should switch to Xorg, display goes blank. Kernel is still running, as F-keys still provide text terminals and system processes are listing via 'ps' command.

Note that this may be the same issue as bug #35484

I will start the installer again tonight and capture the relavent logs and attach them to the bug report tomorrow. I'm at work now (and I work in a Windows shop) so I do not have access to the affected system.

I've uploaded the Xorg.log file for my system. As you'll see, the
last lines in the file indicate that the system is not finding
a video card where it expects to.

Is there anything else I can do t o assist with this? Anything I can
change/add/remove in xorg.config?

(this is tricky with a text browser!)

This may not have been clear on my post of 2006-05-09 09:19:06, but I encounter this bug when booting the "Live" CD of Kubuntu flight-7. As a result, the xorg.conf file is the "stock" unedited version created/used during the Live cd boot.

If you would like, I can boot it again and capture the xorg.conf, however I won't do this unless you need me to.

Does not appear to (necessarily) be related to the DVI inputs.

Replaced DVI cable with VGA cable on ATI Radeon X700 (Asus rebrand) and nothing changed. That is, Kubuntu progress screen showed normally, but when it tried to go to X-windows, it never made it. System is still running, and text terminals are available, but X isn't starting.

'tail' of Xorg.0.log shows the same errors as when connected by DVI (previous attachment): "Fatal server error:
no screens found

Good luck - we're all counting on you!

Need to test with latest Edgy. I'm going to test it shortly.

With the same system I was using when I posted above, I tried to run the Edgy install DVD for both K/Ubuntu. With Edgy, it reaches the point where X should start, then bombs back out to a curses screen stating that there was a problem with X and would I like a detailed error message.

If I then edit xorg.conf to use vesa instead of ati, X will start and everything is fine (more or less -- vesa is not pretty).

Haven't tried it yet.

I was going to wait for Feisty to be released.
