Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

The "File" menue opens unexpected. The menue appears sponanious, when mouse and keyboard is use as well when not in use. It happened that while writing the menue appears and typing one of the short cuts, "p" the print menue appears. It seems to be not a problem of the keyboard, because it happens just in Open-Office.

Do you still see this problem? It seems that your system probably thought the alt key is depressed even when it is not.

I think I solved the problem. There is an interaction of the media player "totem" with OO. When I played internet radio or audio files this problem appears.
The solution sounds a bit odd. In totems preferences (for Gnome 2.26.1) under "display", there is an option "screensaver can start even when audio is playing". (Sorry, I if I do not hit the original english text, I just translate it from german to english).
Anyway, choose this option and the problem in Open Office does not pop up any longer. I don't know if this happens with other media player too.
It is just a guess - maybe if only ALT-F (for e.g.) could open the File-Menue, it won't pop up even when the option in totem is not chosen.

First of all, I changed system language from german to english to reproduce the problem. But the problem as descriped above does not appear. I don't know why. So I'm not sure if you are able to reproduce it in other languages. However, it is probably a problem in the german language translation.

OK. I try to write down in a few steps:
 - Start OpenOffice-Writer or Calc and totem (in german Gnome desktop).
 - In Totem play any audio file like MP3, internet radio
 - Than open in Totem „Preferences“ and than go to the flag "Display". Check if you have marked the option "Allow the screensaver to activate even....". If yes uncheck this option. Change to OpenOffice, than after a few seconds the menue "Files" opens spontaniously without any mouse or keyboard activity.

If you like I can upload a screenshot (250 kb). I did do because I don't want to overstress the server capacity

the issue seems rather an openoffice one since that's the component behaving weirdly there

Do you still have this issue with the new version in Ubuntu 9.04 with the ppa at https://launchpad.net/~openoffice-pkgs/+archive/ppa or Ubuntu Karmic?

I've been able to reproduce the behavior with the "Blueproximity" package. Apparently when it is active the file menu in OpenOffice pops up automatically. The issue disappears when I pause blueproximity.

Peter Odding (peterodding) wrote :

I can confirm (for what it is worth) that running BlueProximity and OpenOffice Writer at the same time causes the File menu in OpenOffice writer to open unexpectedly every N seconds, where N is the "Command interval" configured in BlueProximity. For those who don't know BlueProximity, it locks your screen when you walk away from your computer (your Bluetooth phone goes out of range) and unlocks the screen when you return (your Bluetooth phone gets back in range). It also simulates user activity every N seconds using the command "gnome-screensaver-command -p" for as long as your Bluetooth phone is in range, which is what is causing this problem.

So this bug has nothing to do with Totem or BlueProximity, but rather the interaction between "gnome-screensaver-command -p" and OpenOffice writer. To demonstrate this, open a terminal, execute the command "while sleep 1; do gnome-screensaver-command -p; done" and focus the OpenOffice Writer window. The File menu will now open and close itself every single second...

A temporary workaround for those who want to use BlueProximity and OpenOffice Writer at the same time: Clear the textbox "Proximity command" in the configuration dialog of BlueProximity.

I'm having the same problem - the "File" menu keeps opening on its own. I don't have this problem with any other application. The "alt" key is NOT stuck, the mouse is stationary.

I too am having the same problem. I have VLC open to watch a film, and Writer open to take notes on the film. The menu continues to open at haphazard intervals with the result that as I type I risk triggering file open, save, print dialogues, etc.

Also "Alt" is not stuck, mouse stationary, and I have observed the menu opening spontaneously while I am not touching the keyboard or computer in any way.

[This is an automatic notification.]

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you test if it still occurs on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx)?

Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of Ubuntu, but not in the bug tracker. Instead, to raise the issue through normal support channels, please see:

    http://www.ubuntu.com/support

If you are the original reporter and can still reproduce the issue on Lucid, please run the following command to refresh the report:

  apport-collect 374246

Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report.

If you are not the original reporter, please file a new bug report, so we can work with you as the original reporter instead (you can reference bug 374246 in your report if you think it may be related):

  ubuntu-bug openoffice.org

If by chance you can no longer reproduce the issue on Lucid or if you feel it is no longer relevant, please mark the bug report 'Fix Released' or 'Invalid' as appropriate, at the following URL:

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
