Bug Description

External Speakers do not produce sound when a Dell Latitude C510 is connected to the headphone jack of a port replicator model C/Port II. The builtin speakers are also not muted.

Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package 'alsa'; however, that package was not published in Ubuntu.

Is this a duplicate of bug #37055?

Alex Mauer (hawke) wrote :

No, that bug says that the speakers aren't muted when headphones are plugged in directly to the laptop.

This one says that the port replicator headphone jack doesn't work.

Also, the laptop model is completely different.

Alex, is this still a problem in Edgy final or dapper? Also, could you please attach the output of `lspci`? Thanks.

From bug #37055:
"I found the solution : the "headphone jack sense" must be activated in the gnome-volume-control (accessible in the notify area). Once the option is activated, the headphones are well detected.

Users of the nforce3 chips appear to have this kind of problem."

Alex, can you check this option to see if it is enabled, or if enabling it helps?

Alex Mauer (hawke) wrote :

I don't have this option. I also don't have an nforce3 chipset. See also my previous comment that this is a different problem than bug #37055. If I plug external speakers into the headphone jack on the laptop, the internal speakers are muted properly.

But if I plug them into the headphone jack on the */port replicator/* they do not produce sound, and the internal speakers are not muted.

This sounds like a hardware issue, as external speaker muting is typically done outside of the OS.

Can you check if this issue occurs under other operating systems?

It does not occur under Windows 2000 or XP
