Update 7.10 -> 8.04 fails -> Could not install the upgrades

Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

when running sudo do-release-upgrade on a 7.10, i get a:

Could not install the upgrades

The upgrade aborts now. Your system could be in an unusable state. A
recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and
include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport.
installArchives() failed

in the end

from apt-term.log:
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/duplicity_0.4.10-1_amd64.deb (--unpack):
 subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

Thanks for your report and helping make Ubuntu better. From your logs, I can see that the error occurs while upgrading the duplicity package. The bug has been reassigned.

restart the machine without fearing to have it in an unbootable state?

Hello again,
The only package that failed was duplicity, so you should be safe to restart the computer.

Before restarting, try running:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
in the terminal, then after restarting run
sudo dpkg --configure -a
in the terminal again.

I believe that since 7.10 is end-of-life, upgrades to other versions are no longer supported? But this looks to be a dup of bug 291262 anyway, so marking as such.
