DVD/CD+RW not recognized or found

UPDATED

Have a Toshiba M65 running Jaunty Jantelope 9.04 and the CD/DVD+rw drive does not appear unless I restart my computer. Here is what I am doing and what is happening.

1. I insert a blank DVD and start CD/DVD CREATOR
2. I drag in files to burn, sometimes an iso file
3 CD/DVD CREATOR tells me "Please insert a recordable CD or DVD There is no recordable disc inserted"

If I insert a CD or DVD with stuff on it, like files I want to add to my computer, it does not appear.

However, the drive will operate properly if I restart my computer.

I ran some terminal commands I saw in other forums and have pasted below in hopes they are helpful. I am a total newbie on Linux and know very very little but can do stuff with terminal.

Thanks for reporting this bug.
Sorry, I'm a bit confused by your UPDATE and the UPDATE of the UPDATE. Is this fixed for you or does this still happen.
If your DVD drive is still not found, can you pleaese open a terminal and run
     dmesg > dmesg.log
and attach the resulting file 'dmesg.log' to this bugreport.

Sorry for the confusion, I will clean it up now. It is intermittent and fixes itself if I restart my computer. But it is a consistent problem and at this moment my CD/DVD drive is not working. Below is the log you requested. My computer did not recognize the dmesg.log command but had a lot to say about dmesg.

Hi Markus,
I thought it might be useful to generate that same log with the CD/DVD drive actually working so I restarted my computer and put in a disk to make sure it was operational. It is. Here is that same log but when the drive is working.

Hi,
Sorry, I can't remember what came of it. I ended up giving up on Ubuntu this
time around, though I was very impressed, because of some odd problems with
my battery that only works properly on XP. Will definitely try next release
again though.
