Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

I have an Lenovo (nee IBM) ThinkPad Z61m which has an X1400 chipset. When the second display is connected in extended mode on the right side of the primary built in display there is a vertical strip, approximately 5 pixels wide on the left hand side of the secondary display, where the mouse cursor disappears.
Primary:
  1680x1050 (16:10) @ 60 Hz (Laptop 15") LVDS
Secondary:
  1280x1024 (5:4) @ 75 Hz (Sun 19") VGA

Further, I tried swapping the monitors around with the display utility, so that the Sun monitor is Primary and the Laptop is secondary. The issue still exists and is still on the left edge of the secondary (now the Laptop) display.

Edit: Forgot to add the versions
Up-to-date Jaunty
xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.12.2.99+git20090504.da58e351-0ubuntu0tormod

A new version of the -ati driver is now available in Karmic.

This is a significant update to -ati which brings in kernel mode-setting
(currently disabled) and scores of fixes for DRI2, EXA, etc.

I've posted the new version of this driver to the following PPA,
would you mind testing it and seeing if it resolves the bug you
reported?

  https://edge.launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/709908/+listing-archive-extra

If you're not running this release of Ubuntu, you can try booting the Karmic
LiveCD and loading the PPA onto it, and then log out/in to restart X.
ISOs are available at http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/

After testing Karmic, report back here whether it's still an issue or not,
and if it is please post a fresh Xorg.0.log and 'dmesg' output.

Note there could be new bugs... please file these as new reports using
the command 'ubuntu-bug xorg'.

Hi Bryce, I'm not using the PPA that you have pointed to. Instead I'm using the latest PPA's from Tormod Volden.
1:6.12.99+git20090830.3d6bf0f8-0ubuntu0tormod
These were checked out from the git repo on 30/08/09, so are slightly newer than the ones in your PPA.

The issue is still present in these latest builds.

That should be fine, but I still need your dmesg and Xorg.0.log from karmic.

The problem is still present but, and it could be my imagination, the width of the strip seems a bit thinner. However I did this test with a different monitor setup as well:

Primary:
  1680x1050 (16:10) @ 60 Hz (Laptop 15") LVDS
Secondary:
1280x768 (16:10) @ 60 Hz (MED 30") VGA (Dodgy cheap TV in my furnished rental flat)

I also had to manually edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to get the extended desktop to work.
Under Karmic it stated the need to edit the virtual resolution and if I wanted to change it. I answered yes, but it kept setting it to "Virtual 2048 2048", which didn't work, and it kept repeating the question. I manually changed it to "Virtual 2960 1056" which permitted the extended desktop to work.

I'm seeing this issue as well, using version 1:6.12.99+git20090825.fc74e119-0ubuntu3 with an ATI Radeon HD 3870, two monitors at 1280x1024. The vertical strip appears on the right side monitor, on the left side of it's screen and it's about the width of the mouse cursor itself.

I also had to manually edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf as well, the graphical configuration tool set the Virtual size incorrectly and I had to change it to Virtual 2560 1024.

Same issue here on Ubuntu 9.10 with an AMD RS780 mobile chipset. The cursor disappears when inside a small strip on top of my main screen (laptop screen @ 1280x800). The second screen (external @ 1440x900) is OK.

Hi Stephen,

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you
test if it still occurs on Lucid?

Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of
Ubuntu, but not in the bug tracker. Instead, to raise the issue through
normal support channels, please see:

    http://www.ubuntu.com/support

If you are the original reporter and can still reproduce the issue on
Lucid, please run the following command to refresh the report:

  apport-collect 372841

If you are not the original reporter, please file a new bug report, so
we can work with you as the original reporter instead (you can reference
bug 372841 in your report if you think it may be related):

  ubuntu-bug xorg

If by chance you can no longer reproduce the issue on Lucid or if you
feel it is no longer relevant, please mark the bug report 'Fix Released'
or 'Invalid' as appropriate, at the following URL:

Sorry Bryce, I'm unable to do a retest as the laptop with the ATI X1400 Gfx chip decided to die on me. I'm now using an NVIDIA based laptop, so I can't be of any further help here. Perhaps one of the other people that commented as having this affect them could retest.

I can also confirm this issue.

Radeon HD 3450, dual monitors by using System->Preferences->Monitors, xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.13.0-1ubuntu5. Whenever I mouse to the top of the main screen to click a button on my panel, if I mouse too far the cursor disappears.

My issue was fixed by going to System->Preferences->Monitors and checking the alignment of the monitors. One of mine was shifted slightly upward relative to the other, and the virtual desktop was out of whack as a result. I dragged them so that they were even horizontally, and it fixed my problem.

Stephen Boddy, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-ati REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.
