movie player won't play a dvd says might not have permission

don't know much about ubuntu but i like it

I also had this problem when playing video DVDs that we not made from blank DVDs by a home user. They were DVDs that one would get from a video store for example.

which kind of dvd? encrypted one? normal? do you have the right codecs installed to play that? does totem-xine works fine?
