I also use mobile-broadband and am having exactly the same problem. Both the system-monitor and the panel-applet show no network-activity, even when I am downloading. This is actually a big problem for me because it makes it harder to diagnose network-problems.

Problem also is not fixed on Karmic (9.10a) 8.10 8.04 are OK.

System monitor on the panel shows no network activity indication, when it's opened in a window them shows network on Resources tab.

I see network activity in the Resources tab, but the small docked window in the tray bar shows no activity.

Could it be that the tray bar dock window is scaled too high to show activity (i.e. 100Mbit when the mobile network doesn't go beyond 512kbit for example)?

Reassigning to the gnome-applets package, as the panel network load applet is part of the gnome-applets package, so it is not part of gnome-system-monitor.

affects: gnome-system-monitor (Ubuntu) → gnome-applets (Ubuntu)
