[HD 2600/HD 3670/HD 4650/ Others?] fglrx + Kwin with OpenGL desktop effects = failed resume

Bug Description

Binary package hint: kwin

My Config:
Dell Studio XPS 16
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670
4GB RAM
Kubuntu 9.04 w/ fglrx video driver

My Problem:
When desktop effects are enabled and compositing type is set to OpenGL, resume from suspend-to-ram fails. The resume results in a black screen with some colored lines at the top of the display. The machine appears to be hung i.e. no VT and a hard reboot is necessary.

Temporary Solution:
Normal resume behavior may be achieved by either 1) disabling desktop effects or 2) setting the compositing type to XRender, which is unfortunately much more limited in functionality than OpenGL.

Hi timothy-okeefe,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

OK. I had the amazing idea to zip up all of the contents you asked for into a single attachment.

(I don't think anything is being appended to Xorg.0.log upon suspend or resume).

The contents of the archive are:

Xorg.0.log.old
xorg.conf

I've posted a new version of the -fglrx driver to our xorg-edgers PPA,
would you mind testing it either on Jaunty or Karmic and see if it
resolves this bug?

Hi tmokeefe, from the error messages it seems to think you've customized
your -fglrx config files. So you'll need to resolve that. If you don't
care about your customizations, you could completely uninstall your
current -fglrx and remove /etc/ati/ and try reinstalling.

tmokeefe (timothy-okeefe) wrote : Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 369042] Re: [HD 3670] fglrx + desktop effects = failed resume

I had to uninstall the existing fglrx, delete /etc/ati, and run `apt-get
install -f` which fixed all of the conflicting dependencies.

After running these commands, I was able to install the package.
Unfortunately, after rebooting, the behavior persists.

Where was that libdrm2 that you had in there coming from in the first
place? Really shouldn't have caused an error message, so it would be good
to sort that out too.

Not sure if/when either of those might have upgraded libdrm.

Hello all, I have exactly same issue with my T400 ( I am using the 4500MHD video driver though )
the thing dies when I use opengl for rendering in kwin. If I use xrender it works well. It doesn't have anything in the log file. One thing though, with the 2.8.0 intel driver the system would still allow me to go to terminal window where I can restart X. With previous intel driver 2.7.901.99-r1 ? it would simply hang all the X so that nothing works expect for power button, to which linux would shut itself down _PROPERLY_.

And this is running gentoo with xorg-server-1.6.1-r1 & xf86-video-intel-2.8.0 from portage, libdrm, dri2proto, mesa from the git ( bleeding edge ?)...

so, interested as well with what is going on, as I want to use opengl because it is noticeably faster than the xrender. Just in case here is my config :

@aidar: it's a completely different issue, this is with the propietary fglrx driver, gentoo's is with mesa, this affects kwin when resuming from suspension to memory, that one affects plasma, this is worked around by changing to Xrender compositing, that one is fixed by resetting the plasma conf.

i was just thinking... if the resume fails when Desktop Effects are enabled on suspend, wouldn't it be possible, as a workaround until a proper fix is released, to execute a script that disables desktop effects immediately before suspension, and re-enables them immediately after resume?

i'll see if i can accomplish this. any help would be extremely appreciated, as my bash scripting experience is very limited. If I have any success, i'll post the workaround here.

I have tested my idea, by manually disabling composite immediately before suspend and re enabling it immediately after resume, and it works (ie, it doesn't hang).

I have written the script to do it (dbus is a pleasure!), but i have been looking for weeks for some way to put it in KDE's suspend/resume sequence, but to no avail.

I've been trying to contact Dario Freddi (powerdevil's original author) but he seems to be on vacation until ends of august.

So if anyone knows how to attach a script to powerdevil/solid power actions (NOT profile loading, but specific actions), please let me know. I have already tried putting the call in pm-utils script sequence, but since pm-utils runs system wide, outside from X, it has no access to the dbus session... which is why i need a way to intervene in KDE's power management services (to avoid some ugly hack exporting dbus sessions addresses and whatnot).

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Some good news on this bug finally. I downloaded and installed ATI Catalyst 9.8 last night:

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.5&lang=English

I was finally able to suspend/resume my machine w/ OpenGL compositing enabled. This was after executing the following commands (to rewrite xorg.conf):

cd /etc/
sudo rm xorg.conf
sudo aticonfig --initial

I have even upgraded to KDE 4.3 (kde4-config --version) and Linux 2.6.28-15-generic (uname -r) without any ill effects.

Again, I am running Kubuntu 9.04 64-bit on a Dell Studio XPS 16 with an embedded ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670. I hope this post helps someone.

Here's my xorg.conf's (see attached) from the Catalyst version 9.7 vs 9.8.
9.8 Suspens/resumes flawlessly with compositing enabled (yay!), while 9.7
and earlier did not.

I'm running Ubuntu Jaunty with kernel 2.6.28-15-generic (from uname -r)
with a Gateway M6862 laptop with an ATI Radeon 2600HD card.

Doh, my paste of xorg.conf in the above comment came out all screwy. I've attached the actual xorg.conf file to this comment.

Apparently this bug has been fixed in Catalyst version 9.8. Any chance of backporting the driver into jaunty?
