Bug Description

Ubuntu 9.04 final running on a Dell E1705 laptop with Intel Mobil 945GM (rev 3) video.

I have an external monitor which can accept either VGA or DVI. The monitor has the same resolution as my laptop, 1400X900. If I use DVI Ubuntu report the monitor as "unknown" and the highest resolution available is 1360x768. Rebooting under Windows XP I can use either the VGA or DVI and Windows detects the resolutions correctly, so I know then hardware capability is there.

Here is what xrandr reports using the VGA which is correct:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1440 x 900, maximum 1453 x 1800
VGA connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
   1440x900 59.9 + 75.0 59.9
   1280x1024 75.0 60.0
   1152x864 75.0
   1024x768 75.0 70.1 60.0
   832x624 74.6
   800x600 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
   640x480 75.0 72.8 66.7 59.9
   720x400 70.1
LVDS connected 1440x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 370mm x 230mm
   1440x900 59.9*+ 59.9
   1360x768 59.8
   1152x864 100.0 85.1 85.0 75.0 75.0 70.0 60.0
   1024x768 85.0 75.0 70.1 60.0
   832x624 74.6
   800x600 85.1 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
   640x480 85.0 72.8 75.0 59.9
   720x400 85.0
   640x400 85.1
   640x350 85.1
TMDS-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
TV disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

Here is what xrandr report using DVI on the same monitor which is wrong:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1440 x 900, maximum 1453 x 1800
VGA disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS connected 1440x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 370mm x 230mm
   1440x900 59.9*+ 59.9
   1360x768 59.8
   1152x864 100.0 85.1 85.0 75.0 75.0 70.0 60.0
   1024x768 85.0 75.0 70.1 60.0
   832x624 74.6
   800x600 85.1 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
   640x480 85.0 72.8 75.0 59.9
   720x400 85.0
   640x400 85.1
   640x350 85.1
TMDS-1 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
   1360x768 59.8
   1152x864 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.3
   640x480 59.9
TV disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

The monitor is a Dell SE198WFP 19-inch Widescreen. The VGA looks pretty good but I would prefer the DVI if I can get the resolution right. I have not edited my xorg.conf but I would be willing to if anyone has ideas.

Ubuntu 9.10 has the same bug. I performed a fresh install (meaning not on top of 9.04).

Hi mikesmithv,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

Requested files are attached. I have no xorg.conf file (and have not edited
it, apparently).

This bug is still present in Lucid. The output from xrandr is slightly different but it still does not see the DVI input of this monitor. Below is the xrandr output for the two cases connected as a VGA monitor and as a DVI monitor.

This is xrandr output while connected to the VGA input, DVI unplugged:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1440 x 1800, maximum 4096 x 4096

        v: height 900 start 903 end 909 total 934 clock 59.9Hz

Note the last 3 lines above. These lines do not always appear. Perhaps it is a timing issue where the DVI information is coming from the monitor after xrandr has timed out and has determined the DVI is not connected. I have enclosed the same files you requested before but now running under Lucid.
