Bug Description

Ubuntu Release 9.04 - Jaunty Jackalope

Laptop - Acer TravelMate 4102WLMi, Intel Centrino 1.73GHz, 768MB DDR-333 RAM, i915 onboard Intel video card, Intel 2200BG wireless card

I upgraded my 8.10 install to 9.04 using 'update-manager' last week and since then have been experiencing lockups in Ubuntu every day or so. The entire system freezes, no response on the keyboard, only the mouse pointer is active - set to whatever it was right at the freeze (for eg. if a new application was loading then the mouse pointer remains as a "busy" pointer). The screen stays the same and I can't seem to get it to do anything; the only option is to power-down manually by keeping the power button pressed.

I checked the logs but cannot seem to find any error messages in there, I tried turning on my bluetooth module using the kill switch on the laptop and sure enough there was an entry in /var/log/messages indicating that the system was still very much active and writing log messages in the background.

Could it be a problem with the i915 module?

@mutew, can you paste the output of "lspci -nn | grep VGA" and also a copy of your /var/log/Xorg.0.log please. PS. If it turns out that you have a 965 chipset, then just sit tight because it's a known bug that is being worked hard on.

Now, in case you're on a non-965 chipset... If you have access to two computers can you please install ssh on the buggy machine and then the next time the freeze happens you'll do these things (please note that step 3 requires you to install a new kernel right away even before the freeze happens because only the new 2.6.30 kernels have this new kind of freeze debugging capability):

1) Try to run "apport-collect 368642"
2) If for some arcane reason you're unable to run this command, please sabes copies of xorg.log and xorg.log.old (please do this even if you have previously attached another copy of xorg.log because right after the time freeze has happened there might be special information available in xorg.log or in xorg.log.old that helps us understand the freeze).
3) This is a big one, but please collect a batch buffer dump. This dump is very useful for determining _why_ your machine is freezing. This is the one thing that gives upstream developer a decent chance to fix your bug. Detailed instructions on how to do this is available here: https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-freeze-test

@martin, I have pasted the contents of 'lspci' on top, this is a 915 chipset. I tried running apport on the frozen system but kept getting a "Cannot open Display" error.

I am having an issue with Jaunty on i915. Using Metacity, the CPU gets slowly but surely eaten up with no obvious process eating up the CPU cycles. "top" shows no process taking more than 5-10% CPU time, while the "System Monitor" panel applet shows the CPU at 100% usage, with "IOWait" eating up most of it. When this happens I gradually lose control of the system, where sometimes I can reboot it, while other times it just freezes trying to do it. Most programs stop responding when this happens. Switching to text mode doesn't help as bash can't get enough CPU time to initialize. I can reboot with the Magic SysRq key. I can trigger this easily while on battery, usually within 5-10 minutes of normal usage (browsing, reading PDFs etc).

My question is if this bug is related to the above described symptoms, or is it a completely different bug that's affecting me?

Thanks.

Doesn't sounds like the same thing sorry - if anything more than your mouse pointer works on you screen it probably isn't. And I don't think people with the Intel video lock-ups have any high CPU.

(Suggestion: Check your 'System Monitor' is displaying all processes (on view menu). I noticed that when you upgrade to Jaunty this preference is reverted to just show your processes. If you are looking at all processes you might see what it using you CPU. Likely it is trackerd using up all of your CPU. It seem almost everyone upgrading to Jaunty has their trackerd go haywire and consume CPU or repeatedly complain of corrupt indices. Could be that.)

Aaron: That's right, I ssh'ed into the frozen box and `top` shows no abnormal activity. Everything else seems to be working except the X Windows system. Most people who have complained of this feature have had their entire screen lock up with nothing more than an errant mouse pointer which responds to the track-pad movements, but nothing else. I have been running the 2.6.30-020630rc2-generic kernel to gather dubugging information using the intel-system-tools and the hang-ups occur less frequently, but the behavior is the same when do they occur.

I have a similar (the same?) problem. X freezes randomly, mouse cursor moves as usual, but keyboard is frozen. No switching to text mode via ctrl+alt+Fn possible, but ssh login from remote computer works just fine.

I followed the steps for the X-freeze-test (X Freeze Testing for Intel Graphics), the resulting log files are attached.

Is it helpful for me to say "me too"? I'm on an IBM Thinkpad X60s. Not running a 915 chipset though:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:27a2] (rev 03)

Hangs once every few days, usually when nothing special is going on (not starting a new program, suspending or coming out of suspend, etc. -- just typing along or sitting there). I just read this bug report, so I've just installed sshd and will give it a try next time it locks up. I concur that it seems X-related since some of the hotkeys on the keyboard still seem to work (i.e. the disk LED comes on momentarily when I hit them, even after the system has "locked up"). Nothing except 4 seconds on the power button works once it's locked up.

The dbg version won't have an effect - that just provides debug symbols, which is useful if you're troubleshooting an X crash. But you're having a gpu freeze. It's a shame that the fix in the PPA didn't resolve it, because that's something we could backport to Jaunty.
