Also, try rebooting and see if the hdmi external monitor's resolution shows up then.
If it does, than this is just another [needs UXA] bug.

Rats!
That command requires me to install python-launchpadlib and this is what I
get when I try to install!

Package python-launchpadlib is not available, but is referred to by another
package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package python-launchpadlib has no installation candidate

I did have it working a while ago - but it said I had to "allow all" and I
tried to do that but it wouldn't accept my nomination of that selection, so
I ended up revoking that and I rebooted to see if I could do it again.;

I'll try later!

Martin,

I didn't have the right repos open as I'm now booting off a CD as a recent
upgrade to WiFi networking won't detect my Intel Wifi card :-( - another bug
just reduced.

I only have the laptop running with it's own screen - it will do wide screen
in this configuration, but if I attach the external monitor, I loose the
ability to have wide screen on the laptop.

So now I ran apport-collect for you as you requested and you should have the
files for my laptop running solo without the hdmi monitor attached.

Tell me if I need to run it again with the external monitor.

Thanks

David

First try attaching the monitor before you power on the machine, boot normally. If that doesn't behavor correctly please disconenct the monitor and connect it again, and then attach the xorg.log afterwards.

Finally, does the situation improve if you add:
Option "AccelMethod" "UXA"
into the "Device" section of your xorg.conf and then reboot? This will likely machine you machine run faster but it will most likely also make X.org freeze/hang every now and then because the UXA mode is not entirely stable yet.

Martin,

Unfortunately, I cannot easily do what you asked because of a recent update
to Jaunty resulted in me loosing WiFi connectivity. So I am booting from a
CD of Jaunty 64 bit.

I just ran apport-collect 367557 after I logged out, connected the hdmi
external monitor and rebooted. The problem of the smaller resolution screen
on the laptop appeared so I ran the apport-collect 367557 - and the list
should have this result.

That's the best I can do for the moment. If I have time today, I'll connect
the laptop to the router via ethernet and do as you suggest with the change
of the Device section of xorg.conf as I cannot do this on a Live CD boot.

Hope this is helpful,

David

A new major version of the -intel driver is now available in Karmic.

This version includes a major reworking of the acceleration
architecture, which resolves a huge number of issues. We do not know
whether it resolves the issue you reported.

Would you mind testing Karmic Alpha-2 and seeing if it is still a
problem? CD ISO images are available here:

  http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/

If the issue can still be reproduced on karmic, please report here with
your findings, and attach a fresh Xorg.0.log from your test, and we will
be able to forward the bug upstream.

Otherwise, if the bug no longer exists in Karmic, let us know that as
well.

In the off chance you encounter different bugs while attempting to test
Karmic, please report those as new bug reports.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

It seems likely to me this bug is gone; the -intel driver has improved immensely in Karmic and a lot of bugs are being reported as no longer present. So hopefully that's the case here too.

The bug is gone with the Karmic release - thanks to all!
