Bug Description

I just did a fresh install of Kubuntu 9.04. The install went fine, rebooted, tried to change display settings with the X randr utility, it seemed to work and I rebooted. Upon reboot X wouldn't come up. It got as far as completing the progress bar, and even saw some text after it, but after that all I saw was some junk red pixels at the top of the screen.

I have two monitors, and an ATI card. I should mention that I have Ubuntu 8.10 on this same machine and it works fine. I am attaching my xorg.conf from the 9.04 install as well as the last Xorg.0.log file.

I'd start in runlevel 2, but someone smarter than me thought it was a good idea to remove the inittab file, so I have no idea how to configure the system to not try X.

Additionally, I tried removing all the files in the user's home directory in case it was some config file setting in there, but no dice. It won't start even with an empty home directory.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This appears to be an X.org bug, and I am refiling this bug to them. Please run the command 'apport-collect <bug#>' which will include all the info they need for troubleshooting. Thanks in advance.

Ermm, as I said, I can't log in, how am I supposed to run a command on a blank screen with garbage pixels? I can't drop to runlevel 2, and I can't even bring up a tty.

Try selecting the "recovery option" from the GRUB boot loader and see if you can get to a console from there. If you have ssh already you can also run the command from there. Otherwise, maybe you can boot a live CD, mount your HDD partition from there and then modify the startup scripts (unfortunately I'm not sure exactly what needs to be modified to get your machine to boot into either a terminal or VESA x.org). Note that Ubuntu does not use "init" so inittab is probably not affecting this situation (ubuntu uses "upstart" instead).
