Bug Description

Trying to install the official version of Kubuntu 9.04 on a HP550 laptop, which uses the intel X3100 GPU.

Alternate CD install fails to show anything during disk check or install. After the initial menu the screen goes blank and does not show the usual progress bar.

Afterwards I tried the Desktop (Live) CD which did show the graphical progress bar till about 70%, then it went blank again. This happened in Safe Graphics mode too. I let it continue to install with a blank screen in Safe Graphics mode, and it did install now, but unfortunately it is stuck in 1024x768 on my 1280x800 display without further options in the display settings. Also I need the alternate install to work to be able to install in an LVM partition.

Edit: not Kubuntu specific, today I tried Ubuntu 9.04 Alternate with the same result. 8.04 version installs fine.

Looking at some google- results I find:-
To install Ubuntu 9.04 on the HP550 go to bios and disable "SATA Native Mode" - do normal Jaunty install - then go back to bios
and re-enable the "SATA Native Mode."

(I have no way to check this but perhaps it is worth a try/soloution for your problem.)

Couldn't install it, even after following Ron B. instructions to disable the "SATA Native Mode". Screen just goes black and it stops responding. Ctrl + Alt + Supr reboots the system though.

I also tried disabling the SATA Native Mode, which can be found in the BIOS just like Ron B. suggested, but like riledhel it did not work for me.

May be noteworthy, the new Linux Mint 7 LiveCD installs fine, which is somewhat strange to me as it is very heavily based on Jaunty.

Still, that is not really the ultimate answer for me, as I'm really looking for the additional options of the alternative install CD. So I'm still looking for a solution to this issue.

FYI: I have been trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 to an HP 550 but have the same issue, after selecting "Install Ubuntu" the screen just goes blank. I have disabled SATA Native Mode as suggested here and other places but the issue persists.

I am using the Ubuntu alternative install disk as I want to encrypt the system.

I have tried with the Ubuntu Desktop install disk. I can get as far as the partitioner but have stopped there as I can't use encryption.

The ubuntu based Mint distro has this problem solved... maybe it's
worth checking out...

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Problem was that the developer that this laptop was for needed Ubutnu (9.10) on it to go to the clients with so Mint was not an option.

Anyway, I managed to installit anyway. As that safe graphics option was not there on the alternate disk I went off at a tangent. Yet, when I pressed F6 and then ESC, I could edit the boot options. I removed "--quiet" and replaced it with vga=789.

Cheers

Kelderkeuken, thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Jaunty reached EOL on October 23, 2010.
