Cannot move applications between X server displays

Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Setup: Ubuntu 9.04, dual monitors. Xorg configured to create an xorg display on each monitor. ATI Radion HD 3870

Bug: Cannot drag applications/windows across displays like you can with the mouse.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to reproduce:
Configure more than one monitor and tell X to create a more than one display.
Restart X
login
Launch a program with a GUI
try to move the GUI to the other display

Result: GUI stops at edge of display
Expected Result: GUI to move to the other display

Thanks, but that is due to the architecture of Xorg. The "client" applications connect to a server (one of your X displays). To move them between displays, you would have to disconnect the client from the first server, and reconnect it to the second server (no inbetween). Client applications will usually terminate when you disconnect them from a server anyway.

Why do the programs exit when disconnected from X? There could be some in between but it may be difficult to implement. However, a jerky move between screens is better than total prevention of the move. Is there something that prevents this from being added? I'd work on writing the code if there isn't. I'm going to change it's status to confirmed (because you said it does happen). I don't think it's invalid just because it's by design. Although it's importance would be wishlist. Other OS's (windows for example) does not have this problem. Nvidia's TwinView steps around this problem. Perhaps something like it could be implemented?
