Bug Description

Using
Kernel Linux 2.6.27.11
GNOME 2.24.1
1GB Memory
Intel Pentium 4 @2.66 GHz
96GB free on HDU
Intrepid Ibex Ubuntu 8.10 DVD
Nvidia GeForce 200 Series GTX 295

I want the Extra Visual Effects of Appearance
Nvidia driver in Intrepid Ibex Ubuntu 8.10 DVD renders OpenOffice Org titleless

Then I tried:
Killed X server thru alt-ctrl-f1 as requested by NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.11-pkg1.run Nvidia drivers installer from Nvidia here:

Installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.11-pkg1.run from this URL
http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html
Now OpenOffice Titles are visible in Extra Visual Effects of Appearance
But Terminal screen is 100% blank

Then try to activate the Nvidia proprietary driver option in Ubuntu's Hardware Driver and get the crash

I've tried
this one: Linux IA32 Latest Version: 180.51
and
this one: Latest Legacy GPU version (96.43.xx series): 96.43.11

Hope this info helps

Thanks

The Nvidia Legacy graphics drivers are not even in the Karmic repositories. I had to go back to the jaunty repository to get the drivers for all Nvidia legacy cards. For example TNT and Vanta cards the use the nvida 71.xxx driver and kernel patch. Because some of us use old hardware it is disappointing to see Ubuntu abandon the legacy proprietary drivers in Karmic and future releases. Please add nvidia legacy driver support back into the distribution for the future. I install Ubuntu on many computers for a non-profit organization. We use many old donated computers. We need Ubuntu to continue to offer these legacy drivers andd support for there installation of of the box. As I stated the 71.xxx drivers have been abandoned in the repositories for Karmic.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

@karlrhs: nvidia doesn't provide a proper driver for "xserver 1.5+". Therefore the nvidia-graphics-drivers-71 package has been removed from Karmic.

There is still a problem unless the main x-org file has been changed on the
cd iso image for Karmic. I do not know if the old 71 nvidia drivers are now
in the repositories or not. I use and old TNT Riva card and it requires the
71 nv drivers. If you can make sure this file is included in the
repositories then someone new to ubuntu would not have to go to the Nvidia
site and install manually. You know a newbe will not do this they will just
drop the Linux CD into the garbage bin.

Thank you.

The problem is that Nvidia didn't update driver 71 which, as a result, doesn't work with the xserver in Ubuntu (and this is why we removed it from our repositories). There is nothing we can do about it because the driver is proprietary.

As far as I am concerned the problem was solved by changing the graphics
