Bug Description

qsampler, is a front end to linuxsampler, and should therefore depend on linuxsampler, but it doesn't.

Technically, it's a network TCP frontend to linuxsampler, so it should still be installable on any given machine even without a linuxsampler binary on that machine. Instead, linuxsampler should be in the recommended field.

linuxsampler is not currently available in the development version of Ubuntu, and so the above patch will break qsampler if applied (Recommends cannot be satisfied).

perhaps should recommend liblscp - LinuxSampler Control Protocol wrapper library instead. Please investigate, and update this patch.

qsampler depends on liblscp, which needs to be a depends, as qsampler is essentially a GUI wrapper for LSCP. This bug is related to the fact that qsampler doesn't do much if linux sampler is not installed on a network accessible machine (or the local machine for simple configurations). The linuxsampler license is somewhat confusing (claimed GPL, but with an additional non-commercial clause), which led to Debian bug 328121, and removal.

qsampler is GPL, and there is no reason for it not to be present, but users are currently expected to prepare their own local linuxsampler to make use of qsampler. If the linuxsampler license is clarified, and it is again distributed by Ubuntu, qsampler should recommend linuxsampler. Until then, it shouldn't (as this would cause unsatisfiable recommends).

I cant see the point of this in the archive, if liblscp needs to be a depends, but ubuntustudio-audio depends on it. Therefore, they can look into it. Unsubscribing u-u-s.

Until Linuxsampler can fix its license issues Ubuntu Studio will be dropping qsampler from its seeds.

We are however in favor of keeping qsampler in the archive as our users have said the use it and grab Linuxsampler themselves.

I will be poking Linuxsampler upstream to try to fix this during the Hardy cycle.

Can it not just go in the multiverse? It's considerably more free than things that are in there already, flash, nvidia driver, etc... surely there's no need to remove it from the repos completely?

or may put it in restricted? or something. I can't get qsampler to work there are incompatibilities between the current ubuntu packages and the linuxsampler compiled from <email address hidden> 0.5.1-1. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qsampler/+bug/241164
