Bug Description

When using "gnome-display-properties" to change monitor refresh rate the refresh rate is listed as 0Hz in the drop down box. Changing the resolution works just fine. The monitor is an analog VGA CRT display connected via DVI to VGA adapter to an Nvidia 6600GT dual DVI card. The computer is an Dell but I upgraded the video some years ago.

The monitor manual, specifications are on page 8:

Installed using Ubuntu 9.04RC
Description: Ubuntu 9.04
Release: 9.04
Analog VGA CRT Panasonic PanaSync E70G
EDID v1.1

I'm using a CMV 221D Monitor, which worked with Ubuntu Version 8.04 in 1024 x 768 mode. However, Version 9.10 beta defaults to an assumed 1280 x 1024 (5:4) mode. System / Preferences /Display shows "Unknown" Monitor; Refresh Rate 0hz.

I reported this earlier as a bug, but was told it was not. I have attached my current Xorg.0.log for my current dynamically generated configuration. I spent a couple of days trying "many" configuration alternatives, but in the end, all were ignored and reverted back to an essentially empty /etc/X11/xorg.conf similar to my current one as noted below:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Configured Video Device"
    Driver "vesa"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
    Monitor "Configured Monitor"
    Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

If this monitor will not be supported, please let me know so that I can revert back to an earlier version prior to dropping support for this monitor. Thanks...

I should probably explain, that while 1280 x 1024 (5:4) "works", the average font size is two small to comfortably read for long periods, as I do, and small fonts are too small to read at all.

My problem is that I can not set the display to 1024 x 768 as was the default for Ubuntu 8.04 and before.

Hmm in your first post Nvidia 6600GT is mentioned, but in your latest it is, ATI Radeon 9200 SE, do you have both in your system?
What drivers have you installed?

Ajenbo,

Insofar as my current installation, I haven't added any drivers beyond those Ubuntu installs by default. I tried several earlier, but haven't attempted to reinstall them since they either failed entirely or provided no improvement. The ATI CD contains only MS Windows drivers.

It's been awhile since I've heard anything back on this issue, so currently I'm using two computers which share the same monitor and just toggle back and forth thus allowing me to use MS Windows for extended browsing, etc., use.

However, one thing I haven't previously mentioned is that when I attempt to change the default 1280x1024 (5:4) configuration to the preferred 1024x768 (4:3) resolution, the failure appears skewed like older TV's when your Vertical / Horizontal settings are out of sync. That is, although not readable, what appears on the screen is not total gibberish, but rather appears to be organized but skewed suggesting that perhaps the issue is more a one of the 5:4 ratio not properly converting to the default 1024x768 4:3 ratio; suggesting a need for 1024x768 (5:4) resolution to work properly.

Later versions of Ubuntu have since resolved most of the difficulties reported with this bug report. That is, I can change resolutions to one most appropriate for both my monitor and eye-sight. The only remaining issue is that the available ratios distort the appearance of letters, etc. However, rather than be nit-picking, I'd rather accept the monster improvements that have thusfar been provided and close this bug report. Many thanks to all involved in making Ubuntu the powerhouse it has become.

Fabio,

Note: This is not a report of a new bug but rather reporting the progressive resolution of the bug originally reported...

I'm not too clear on how to provide the package affected information you have requested, hence I have attached a file containing my system's current configuration. I should point out that by trying some of the other monitor configurations the ratio problem seems to be resolved hence things appear to be operating about as well as anyone could expect.

Thanks again to all those responsible for your excellent work....
