Bug Description

On Kubuntu Jaunty 9.04, my laptop freezes after I try to logout. My KDE session ends, but I never get the KDM login screen and the system freezes. Even toggling num-lock does not work. I need to poweroff and then poweron the laptop.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Click on "Leave".
2. Click on "Logout".

I'm experiencing this same issue on my new Kubuntu 9.04 RC install. Logout leads to almost complete system freeze. First time I tried logout I had to force shutdown computer by powerswitch, but second time I tried it seemed that ctrl+alt+del managed to reset computer?

I have the bug too. To recover i usually:
1. Connect to the frozen computer using SSH.
2. Run sudo pm-suspend
3. Enter my password.
4. Wake up the computer.
5. Press Control-Alt-F1

This gives you a text terminal.

Note that i have gdm disabled in this set up.

Note the following lines at the end of the console output:
waiting for x server to shut down Output CRT2 disable success
Blank CRTC 0 success
Disable CRTC 0 success
Disable CRTC memreq 0 success
Output CRT1 disable success
Blank CRTC 1 success
Disable CRTC 1 success
Disable CRTC memreq 1 success
..........

xinit: X Server slow to shut down, sending KILL signal.

waiting for server to die.

As you can see, the x server is killed before waking the displays with:
Enable CRTC memreq 1 success
Enable CRTC 1 success
Unblank CRTC 1 success
Enable CRTC memreq 0 success
Enable CRTC 0 success
Unblank CRTC 0 success

My configuration:
Ubuntu 9.04 desktop
open source ati driver
apt-get remove usplash
disabled gdm
