gnome not installable

Bug #361702 reported by le père Léon

Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
meta-gnome2 (Ubuntu)
Invalid
Undecided

Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-desktop-environment

release : Hardy (LTS)

problem :
- gnome package depends on gnome-desktop-environment package
- gnome-desktop-environment package depends on gnome-keyring-manager package
- gnome-keyring-manager package is not available
That makes gnome uninstallable in the Hardy LTS release.

You might want to look at bugs before marking them a dup. That bug has been closed, it was previously fixed. Hence my report that GNOME is not installable, yet again.

No, that bug is "Fix Committed", because the fixed package is sitting in hardy-proposed still. And even "Fix Released" doesn't necessarily mean that the bug is fixed in the version that you're using (it only guarantees that it is fixed in the development release). You might want to look at bugs yourself before suggesting that I didn't look at it.

I did. I also used the intermediate release, which worked just fine.
In the software world, that would be classified as a "regression".

File it as a dup if you really want to. It will solve nothing, really.

I don't get what you mean by "intermediate release". This bug is only fixed in Intrepid and Jaunty. If you're running Hardy, and haven't enabled the proposed updates, then you will still experience this bug. This bug has not yet been officially fixed in Hardy.

Apologies. I thought this was the bug I reported for Jaunty (which, btw, wasn't fixed as of a week ago, it regressed), this is another Hardy user. My bad.

That said, how hasn't this been fixed in Hardy? The Ubuntu policies need to be reviewed, they appear to be woefully inefficient.

What does make that bug "invalid"?

And if duplicate (and so should be marked a duplicate), is it from bug #325698? its status is "invalid", it has been transformed into question #60004 and marked as solved, but there is no answer/solution to that bug.

Michael - the Hardy package is still sitting in hardy-proposed because no tester has provided feedback saying whether the fix works with no regressions yet. Feel free to test the package and leave feedback in the master bug report as per Martin Pitt's comment.

le père Léon - bug 325698 was (wrongly) converted in to a support request by another individual. It should have been a duplicate of bug 216756 too.

I'd have to install Hardy in a VM (which I honestly do not have time for now), but the fix is simple: if you can "apt-get gnome" in hardy with that repository, then the bug is fixed and it should be moved out of -proposed. Mayhap a bug report needs filed against Ubuntu policy to account for trivial fixes as such. That said, bug 346938 also needs fixed (which is not a dup). For whatever reason, I thought the assignments here as a dup were for that bug. I _really_ shouldn't read my mail right after waking up...
