It has always worked for me. I have used the base game and FoFix, along with RF-Mod. They all work. I can't test it appropriately as I use nVidia GeForce 6200, but I can confirm that it has ran in the past.

when i had ubuntu 8.10 it was working but with 9.04 not any more

The game runs with the proprietary nvidia 180.xx driver. I won't say runs well as it's shockingly coded with lack of basic command switches for fullscreen/windowed mode and it's handling of screen modes.

One thing to try due to it's interpreted nature. Try installing libgl1-mesa-dev.

Karmic has fretsonfire 1.3.110.dfsg-1, the bug is fixed upstream with 1.3.110.dfsg-2 which we should have for Lucid. Note that installing libgl1-mesa-dev should fix the problem.
