Hi,

have the same laptop model (8919DFG with NVidia). I did not have any problems with suspend to RAM with 2.6.28-11.38-generic, but suspend to disk did not wake up properly. I only got up to a very distorted (256 color palette???) image of my desktop, and then the laptop froze.

Today I upgraded to 2.6.28-11.39 and installed the checkbox package as well. Then I ran the tests for suspend, which all passed, but they are S3 suspend only anyway. But then I suspended to disk again via the KDE menu and then restarted after a couple of minutes. Got the same distorted frozen desktop as before, but this time it blanked itself after about 15 seconds, then reposted itself,.... was frozen for a bit again,... and finally appeared normally. After that the wlan and bluetooth devices reconnected themselves without any problems.

Sorry to say but this is one of the unfortunate combinations of NVidia GPUs and motherboard/chipsets, that have problem with restarting the X server without rebooting the kernel, because they go into a lock for 30 seconds in the kernel. I always need to tweak my [k|g}dm configs to increase the X server timeout to 40 seconds minimum in order to be able to logout and login again. I think it might be the same problem at the root of this two seemingly unrelated issues.

For comparison I attached what was left in my dmesg buffer after so many suspends/wake-ups. You can see some of the last suspend-to-RAM tests from the checkbox script (going into ACPI S3 state/recovering from S3) and then the last one is S4, suspend to disk. And I'm happy to say it woke up even from an encrypted swap.

Hope you will experience a better result when you test the last kernel package. I'll keep testing every new kernel packages until official release and hope not to see any regression.

Kind regards

Todor

Hi Benjamin,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 353390

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Jeremy,

Thanks for the Follow-Up on my problem. Unfortunately, I can not tell
anymore if the problem still persists, as I switched Laptops.

Kind Regards,

Benjamin

I would think that this bug was kernel version specific and can be closed. I have not had any problems with suspend/hibernate/resume since 2.6.30 - the last time my problems were related to changes in luks and the device mapper. But that was fixed as well since then. Right now I run on my Lenove 8918-DFG laptop Karmic Koala with 2.6.31-20-generic and nvidia 195.36.15 and it resumes after suspend and hibernate without problems.

(Just to be sure I did a suspend and then hibernate at this point - it worked and I did not loose my data)

If you need something more to close this bug, please let me know.

Regdards,

Todor

Hibernate still does not work for me on this model of laptop on Lucid. I will provide the info Jeremy asks for later on today. I'm willing to try a mainline kernel if you think that will help?

Also if there's any other things anyone wants me to try or info required, please let me know.

I've not kept up with the state of things with the nvidia drivers. If it's possible to get decent 2d desktop performance (all effects off) and watch movies without using the binary nvidia drivers then I'm willing to try that too.

Cheers,
Andy

Why has this bug been expired? It still happens, as I indicated. I gave more information and asked what else was required. I'm ready and able to do whatever debugging you want. Please don't expire a bug that still exists.

Me just saying it still exists in Lucid on this hardware should be reason enough to keep it open.

Ah OK, I missed/forgot that you asked for an upstream kernel to be tested. A prod would've been nice - just expiring it feels like a bit of a snub. I'll get onto the kernel today. Please don't expire the bug.

When I select "Hibernate" from the power menu, X returns to a console with a flashing cursor and the laptop's "hibernating" light flashes. This has so far been the case for over 5 minutes, so I assume it has crashed. I have to power cycle it to boot it again and it doesn't offer to resume at that point.

Please let me know if there's anything else you'd like me to try.
