After poking around, I was able to get OSS output to work. :/
I discovered the following PPA:
https:/
I installed it.
Audio is back, but "skips", this may *not* be a kernel bug.
Maybe more of an ALSA bug.
Here is my up-to-date alsa dump information:

Sorry to hear that, I do know that I am now experiencing problems
similar to yours, and they improved somewhat when I updated the ALSA
stuff, have you tried setting the output to OSS to see if it is any better?

I installed the package pavucontrol and now my sound works.
I had to change the OUTPUT.
Applications->Sound & Video->Pulse Audio Volume Control
Select tab "Configuration"
I then changed between the different profiles until audio came out.
The profile I am currently using is "Output Analog Steeo + Input Analog
Stereo"

I have to say that videos and audio files played using vlc media player does not have this problem but it does with totem and with pidgin sounds, I give you this clue
WolphFang (mjoyner-vbservices) wrote : Re: [Bug 353206] Re: 00:05.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP61 High Definition Audio (rev a2) | #23 |
I did the following and my audio works with the exception of vmware-server
trying access /dev/dsp.
sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio
reboot
make sure volume control points the correct ALSA device and that volumes are
properly set.
go through and tell all my apps to use ALSA

Thnk you for your time in advance:
what I did, I followed the link in http://
step 1,
I tried to toggle the 'input source' in alsamixer:
see my .png
I have two options:
Front mic and Line,
tried to select Line and check it using sound recorder; result: beep
toggled again to 'Front mic' and check it using sound recorder; result: beep
step 2,
uninstall alsa-backports; I do not know if I have them, either how to chek it, but I tried the following in terminal:
sudo apt-get purge linux-backports
Sudo says is not installed so it cannot be removed, so trying again with the upgrading.
Closing all programs that can need the alsa (ekiga, sound recorder, pidgin, leaving only openoffice, firefox (without music for your post) omegaT) and running the script
step 3,
download the script and save it somewhere
2. cd <your-download-dir>
3. tar xvf AlsaUpgrade-
4. sudo ./AlsaUpgrade-
5. sudo ./AlsaUpgrade-
6. sudo ./AlsaUpgrade-
7. sudo shutdown -r 0
step 4 checking the version
cat /proc/asound/
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.23.
Compiled on Jun 10 2010 for kernel 2.6.32-22-generic (SMP).
step5 testing aplay
speaker-test -Dplughw:0,0 -c2: test OK
step 6, multiples checking:
check if your alsamixer-channels are activated and unmuted (gnome-
see in my .png that nothing is unmuted
step 7, /etc/modprobe.
