speakers pop on suspend, shutdown, restart

Bug Description

When I suspend, shutdown, hibernate, or restart my HP Pavilion dv5, the speakers pop. If I boot into windows, there is no such problem -- so it isn't the hardware. This happens if the speakers are muted or not. This is not only obnoxious -- it's a loud pop which can damage speakers.

This issue has been around since at least Hardy, and I'm now using Jaunty (9.04 development branch) and I still have the same problem. This thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=934399 shows that other people are also experiencing the problem.

Thanks. Can everyone post the output of lspci so we can see if there is a specific set of hardware effected by this?

PulseAudio can't touch the underlying controller and codec. That's linux's job.

Hi boothby,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p alsa-base 352540

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
