Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-177

Ubuntu Studio 8.10 x86_64

Linux xxx 2.6.27-14-generic #1 SMP Fri Mar 13 19:54:51 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Nvidia accelerated gfx driver version 177.82

me@mysystem:~$ sudo apt-cache policy nvidia-glx-177
nvidia-glx-177:
  Installed: 177.82-0ubuntu0.1

Running 2 monitors on a dual-dvi nvidia 8800GT in TwinView mode.

Left monitor is a Dell 1907FP, 1280x1024 native resolution
Right monitor is a Dell E228WFP, 1680x1050 native resolution

I have the 1907 on the left, and the 228 on the right. The 228 on the right is my "primary" screen, with the main gnome panel, desktop icons, etc.

When adding a new item to the desktop - such as downloading a file - the item is always displayed on the left screen.

I have tried:

> Switching the monitors on the dvi ports on the video card
> Using nvidia-settings to switch the "primary display" with the checkbox
> Using nvidia-settings to change the positions of the monitors, such as absolute, right of, left of, etc

I have set up various desktop icons, such as trash, etc, using the nautilus settings in Configuration Editor, and these seem to stay on the right-hand screen.

It's when new files are created, such as downloads, or even touching a new file, that the icon for that file is placed on the top-left of the left-hand screen.

I don't see an option anywhere to set this, so am assuming it's a bug with the nvidia TwinView mechanism.

To summarise:

Expected:

New files are placed on the desktop marked as primary in nvidia-settings

Actual result:

New files are always placed on the left-hand desktop

Please don't hesitate to let me know if you need any more info

Hi greg-moxham,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

Hi Bryce

Please find attached all the requested files.

FYI I updated to the new 1.80 nvidia driver and did the following, still with the same results:

1. Deleted /etc/X11/xorg.conf
2. Restarted GDM to create a new xorg.conf
3. Ran sudo nvidia-xconfig
4. Restarted GDM
5. Set up twinview with the second monitor on the left side and set the right monitor as primary display
6. Created a new file on the desktop, it was placed on the left screen.

I'm having the same problem in 9.04. Everything worked perfectly in 8.04 with
the 173 drivers. When I open any program from the menu (except Firefox, Mozilla
Prism, MonoDevelop, or the foomatic gui), they open on screen 0. If I use alt+f2
on screen 1, the application opens on screen 1. If i create any desktop
launchers they only appear on screen 0.

I running two monitors as follows:
"Monitor0" "SceptreX9G-NagaV" HorizSync 30.0-81.0 VertRefresh 40.0-76.0
"Monitor1" "Staples" "LCD SP9106" HorizSync 31.0-83.0 VertRefresh 56.0-75.0
"GeForce 9600 GT" "PCI:1:0:0" Dual Head

I've attached a tar file with my xorg.conf which was configured by
nivida-settings. When that didn't work I had edited the file to set up two
separate x screens like I've always done with the same results. The tar file
contains the output from `lspci -vnnn` and the output from
`sudo apt-cache policy nvidia-glx-180`. The video card is an Asus 9600GT with
two DVI outputs.

I thought maybe some extra information might help solve the problem.

I've posted a new version of the -nvidia driver to our xorg-edgers PPA,
would you mind testing it either on Jaunty or Karmic and see if it

No problem. I'll get it tested to night.

Bryce:

The attached archive contains the tests I ran with the new drivers. I tried them with a twinview setup and a complete dual screen setup. The archives contain screenshots of both setups, lscpi -vnnn, apt-cache nvidia, Xorg logs, and a text file detailing my results. The complete dual screen setup still doesn't work right. To me the twinview is fine with the possible exception of the desktop launchers. If you open an app in the twinview setup and it opens on screen1 you can minimize it, move it to screen0, then close it. It will then open on screen0 the next time you open it. That's not the case with a dual screen setup.

Just installed 9.10 64-bit from scratch and the same is happening with the "nvidia-graphics-drivers-185" driver.

ie:

1. Mount a filesystem by going places > somefilesystem
2. Filesystem icon appears on secondary screen (left in my case)
3. File browser window automatically opened on secondary screen (left in my case)
