Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha6 this weekend on my "new" IBM ThinkPad T60 with ATI X1400 (dedicated 128MB RAM) and getting some strange screen/graphics errors as seen below.

I deactivated compiz to make sure it was not fault. It came preinstalled with Windows XP and I did not notice any errors like this - but I surely did not use it long enough to say this isn't some hardware caused failure.

I am not sure, but I have seen similar errors on my old fujitsu amila a7600 with older video-ati drivers at that time, so my first conclusion was some driver problems.

Are these errors somehow known / familiar ?

They come and go.. not really disturbing but I'd do better without them ;)

Hi guenter-grodotzki,

Thanks for including an image to demonstrate the issue. Could you also please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log or Xorg.0.log.old file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

A new version of the -ati driver is now available in Karmic.

This is a significant update to -ati which brings in kernel mode-setting
(currently disabled) and scores of fixes for DRI2, EXA, etc.

I've posted the new version of this driver to the following PPA,
would you mind testing it and seeing if it resolves the bug you
reported?

  https://edge.launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/709908/+listing-archive-extra

If you're not running this release of Ubuntu, you can try booting the Karmic
LiveCD and loading the PPA onto it, and then log out/in to restart X.
ISOs are available at http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/

After testing Karmic, report back here whether it's still an issue or not,
and if it is please post a fresh Xorg.0.log and 'dmesg' output.

Note there could be new bugs... please file these as new reports using
the command 'ubuntu-bug xorg'.

I did a fresh Ubuntu Karmic Alpha 5 install (which luckily already included your newer drivers) at seems that the problems are gone. I would still like to use the system a little longer before being sure.

I definitely ran into less problems during the upgrade progress until now karmic. Means: that kind of disordered graphics like on the first screenshot I did not get anymore since a long time.

I do have still some really very small glitches as you can see in my new screenshot, though they are really very tiny and get removed when moving the window or so.

Hi Günter,

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you
test if it still occurs on Lucid?

Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of
Ubuntu, but not in the bug tracker. Instead, to raise the issue through

adding "radeon.modeset=0" in /etc/default/grub solved the problems. Thank you very much :)

Okay, guess we'll close the bug out in that case. If you test maverick and find the issue still exists there, you can file a new bug on it.
