Bug Description

I discovered this issue by accident. When first using Ubuntu 8.10 in early Feb '09 the recommended video driver was 177. I installed a program that I used in Windows that does have a Linux version (Bibble 5 Pro) and it was fully functional. I now also dual boot to Ubuntu 9.04 alpha 6 & there has been several driver updates to both OS. Nvidia 180.11, 180.35, 180.37 & beta 185.13 cause Bibble 5 Pro to crash on launching the program in both OS, Ubuntu 8.10 & Ubuntu 9.04 alpha 6, fully updated. When attempting to launch Bibble 5 Pro with terminal while any nvidia driver in the 180 series & above, I get the following error;

george@jauntygeorge-desktop:~$ bibble5pro

I have tested Bibble 5 Pro with an older nvidia driver installed, v173.14.16, & the program is fully functional again!
Hope this can be resolved.

Added commits 03-21-2009
Reading through the link below @ http://support.bibblelabs.com, I found a solution.

http://support.bibblelabs.com/webboard/viewtopic.php?t=11977&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=linux+nvidia&start=0&sid=37a720e66b65cec3b8946735bd4c8f76

I downloaded some older nVidia driver libs (see below) & copied them to /opt/bibble5pro/lib as described in the thread above.
http://support.bibblelabs.com/webboard/download.php?id=2498

I know this is a patch & not a proper solution but it indicates the issue could be Bibble Labs, not 9.04.

Hi georgeaross,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

In Jaunty (9.04), we have just updated to the latest
nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 package from nVidia, version 180.44.

This package provides fixes for a large number of bugs, and we need your
assistance in testing if it fixes the issue you reported.

To do this, please do the following:

 a. Update to the 180.44 version of -nvidia using your favorite update
     method

 b. Attempt to reproduce your bug

 c. If your bug still remains, please simply reply to this email
     indicating so.

 d. If your bug is now solved, you can help us by setting your bug
     report to Fix Released:
     * In launchpad, go to your bug report
     * Click on the downward pointing arrow under Status
     * Set the Status field to 'Fix Released'
     * Comment on the change, such as, 'Verified fixed in 180.44'
     * Click 'Save Changes'

 e. If the original problem is solved but there are now other problems,
     please close the original bug and open new ones for those issues.

Thank you!

For details on the changes in this version of -nvidia, please see:

I installed a program that I used in Windows that does have a Linux version (Bibble 5 Pro) and it was fully functional. I now also dual boot to Ubuntu 9.04 alpha 6 & there has been several driver updates to both OS. Nvidia 180.11, 180.35, 180.37 & beta 185.13 cause Bibble 5 Pro to crash on launching the program in both OS, Ubuntu 8.10 & Ubuntu 9.04 alpha 6, fully updated. When attempting to launch Bibble 5 Pro with terminal while any nvidia driver in the 180 series & above, I get the following error;

Alberto,
I wish I could say I know computers like the back of my hand but I cannot! All I can do is point you to a thread when some people who are knowledgeable discussed the problem & patched a solution. Please read the attached thread pointer but I can say after reading that nVidia, in updating the Linux drivers starting with 180.xx versions, moved or deleted files that Linux OS has dependency. Opon launch, Bibble 5 Pro cannot find the needed files & launch fails. The patch is to copy these older files & paste them into /opt/bibble5pro/lib. With the dependency satisfied, the program launches.

Quote from a Bibble Lab software developer...
"I will ask the linux packaging guy when he wakes up. It might be better to remove the dependency because I don't think it's being used right now.

libcuda.so, libcuda.so.1, libcuda.so.177.82, libGL.so.1, libGL.so.177.82, libGLcore.so.1, libGLcore.so.177.82, libnvidia-tls.so.1, libnvidia-tls.so.177.82, libXvMCNVIDIA.so, libXvMCNVIDIA.so.1, libXvMCNVIDIA.so.177.82 & libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1.

All I can say is, it works. Whatever was present in older nVidia drivers, v173 & v177, is no longer present in newer versions 180 & up.

I've posted a new version of the -nvidia driver to our xorg-edgers PPA,
would you mind testing it either on Jaunty or Karmic and see if it
