cannot customize mouse cursor on ubuntu Intrepid

Bug Description

Binary package hint: gcursor

I am on a Lenovo X61 laptop running Ubuntu Intrepid. My mouse pointer theme seems to be stuck at a particular one. When I change the theme, it only changes the cursor when it is over certain applications (firefox in particular).

I have attached a Screenshot but the wierd part is, the screenshot shows the correct theme!!! Although, the pointer on the screenshot is the same one as selected (white) my actual pointer is the red one! I am sorry that I cannot prove it, but trust me I can't change my pointer theme.

The screenshot shows my desktop. I have a dual monitor setup which is why it there is a desktop on top of another desktop. Notice that the pointer is the same as the theme selected, but that's not what I SEE. My pointer is red. Edit (398.2 KiB, image/png)

Update: looks like when I turn off "Visual Effects" everything works. So
maybe something with compiz?
