Subject: Bug#511762: hpijs-ppds: Several ppds not working with newer cups
Date: Wednesday 14 January 2009
From: Thomas Viehweger <email address hidden>
To: Debian Bug Tracking System <email address hidden>
Package: hpijs-ppds
Version: 2.8.6.b-3
Severity: important
Due to the more strict interpreter in cups 1.3.8 I get the following error
with /usr/share/
PPD file for Farblaser cannot be loaded!
Missing value string on line 122.
Hint: Run "cupstestppd /etc/cups/
this is valid for 2.8.6.b-3 in Lenny and also for 2.8.12-1 in experimental.
(My printer URI in cups is: usb://HP/
The ppds for this printer (HP_Color_
foomatic-db 20080211-2+nmu1 and
openprinting-ppds 20080211-2+nmu1
are correct. See also

Maybe it is possible to run the cupstestppd and remove/fix failing ppds during
the build process of the deb?
By the way, the actual file in experimental contains many duplicate files
compressed, uncompressed, small/uppercase letters.

Thomas:
1. Ensure that you are a member of the lp group. (you can run "groups" from terminal) If you are not a member refer to this site: http:// ubuntuforums. org/archive/ index.php/ t-28175. html to see how to do this.
2. I would suggest going to: http:// hplipopensource .com/hplip- web/index. html and downloading 3.9.2, the newest version of our software.
3. If you are still experiencing issues with the ppd file during the installation process of the new software then you need to choose the ppd file from the hplip tarball that you downloaded. When prompted for the ppd navigate to the ppd directory in the hplip-3.9.2 file that was downloaded (mine is /home/< username> /Desktop/ hplip-3. 9.2/ppd) and choose the file that has the name of your printer. Then continue with installation and everything should be normal.
Please let me know if this issue persists.
