Bug Description

Binary package hint: mythtv-frontend

jaunty alpha5 installed on atom330 board, and updated (on 3/15/2009). Installation of mythtv frontend went smoothly, all settings at default, and I can watch tv / listen to sound delivered from a separate mythtv backend.

However, it does NOT respond to the "o" key (to show channel info) nor the cursor up and down keys to switch between channels. it does respond to the curosr left/right keys (move forward/back) and "m" key to show the program guide. Here cursor up/down left/right all do work.

Same computer running Hardy worked correctly; other computer on Hardy also works correctly.

I don't understand your question. mythtv is started from the gnome desktop.

to add: the "p" key does pause and continue any replay (as it should), but again, there is no on-screen display as found on other installs. You get no feedback of what keys you have pressed.

Sounds like you are missing a theme OSD then probably

if so, then it is missing in the default installation and needs correction

Here's the key point. You installed on the same computer that had hardy on
it already. That means your old settings are stored in the mysql table.
You need to install the missing themes then that you had on hardy.

Nope. This computer had a fresh install from a jaunty-alpha5 CD, and everything had been wiped out by the install of jaunty.

But this is connecting to your existing backend isn't it? That data is
stored on the mysql server.

indeed I am using an existing backend, and several frontends, with back- and frontends having gone through some changes from feisty to intrepid, and always worked.

So, what is different with jaunty? Do I need to change settings on the jaunty frontend? or on the intrepid backend? and if on the latter, do I need to change other intrepid frontends too?

Why is the jaunty frontend insisting on whatever setting - shouldn't it be content with what every other client is doing and do the same?

All you have to do is install the same themes that you had installed
in intrepid. They might not get installed anymore by default on jaunty
possibly.

Are we really talking about the same thing? All my clients are set to the same UI theme G.A.N.T. And while all on intrepid (or previous versions) are working fine, the jaunty install is not.

Also, I cannot find any settings on the backend, which relate to any theme. Theme settings, as far as I can see, are done in the clients only, and irrespective of them being the same everywhere, why would a client require a particular theme on any other client?

I am happy to make any changes, but I can't find any places which I could change

No. I am talking about the OSD theme. it is set individually on each
client, but the setting is stored in the mysql tables on the backend's
sql server.

After intensive search I found that the appearance of the OSD theme is not set under Appearance, but under TV settings, and it is called Playback OSD.

However, I actually did not change anything but just clicked my way through, and then it was working. Well, almost. The default setting is messed up and flips from bottom to top, and then does not contain the OSD text in its frame, spilling over into the video and is barely legible. The blue theme then does work

Could that be made more intuitively?

That's a separate discussion that you should have with upstream. I'll close
up this bug then since that's what the root cause was.
