cursor freezes in Jaunty Alpha 5 with Nvidia 180 driver

Bug Description

The package could be the Nvidia driver but I don't know. The cursor freezes when I am in Firefox or checkgmail, but also froze when I was playing Gweled. I don't have any screenshots to show because when the screen freezes, I have a struggle to either reboot the system or figure out what ALT combination will regain me some control. Please help. I don't want to go back to Intrepid again but I can't use Jaunty right now.

The last time I tried to use Jaunty with the Nvidia driver, my screen also froze. That was with Alpha 3. My monitor's resolution is 1440 by 900. I am using nvidia-180-glx. The resolution is not set properly for my widescreen monitor, either - but I could live with that if I could just be able to use my computer.

I don't know if this will help. When I start my computer up, I get an error message: no nforce2 chipset.

Hi ginnyh532,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

Here is the Xorg log. My computer is giving me a hard time because of the Nvidia driver. It isn't responding to all of my commands.

In Jaunty (9.04), we have just updated to the latest
nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 package from nVidia, version 180.44.

This package provides fixes for a large number of bugs, and we need your
assistance in testing if it fixes the issue you reported.

To do this, please do the following:

 a. Update to the 180.44 version of -nvidia using your favorite update
     method

 b. Attempt to reproduce your bug

 c. If your bug still remains, please simply reply to this email
     indicating so.

 d. If your bug is now solved, you can help us by setting your bug
     report to Fix Released:
     * In launchpad, go to your bug report
     * Click on the downward pointing arrow under Status
     * Set the Status field to 'Fix Released'
     * Comment on the change, such as, 'Verified fixed in 180.44'
     * Click 'Save Changes'

 e. If the original problem is solved but there are now other problems,
please close the original bug and open new ones for those issues.

Thank you!

For details on the changes in this version of -nvidia, please see:

Even with the change in the Nvidia driver, my screen is still set to the
wrong resolution (the real one is 1440 x 900, as opposed to the 1368 x 768 -
if I remember correctly - that it is trying to make me use). I still have
to use alt combinations to close screens and still can't use parts of
screens that use a sliding bar if I have changed to another part of the
screen.

It might help if I add that when there are multiple parts to a window - like in Nautilus where there will be the list on the left and the separate field of folder icons to the right, I can't use my mouse to get from one side to the other. I have to tab until I've gone from the left side to the right - or vice versa - and then use arrow keys. It's a real pain to use the Synaptic Package Manager as well, due to not being able to mouse between areas, and not being able to left click on the files I want to add. Hope this helps.

Nvidia still didn't recognize that my monitor required 1440 x 900, but with the other fixes, I set the resolution manually and am having no problems.

My machine freezes randomly when using nvidia-glx-180 (180.44) in Jaunty. Switching to nvidia-glx-173 seems to work fine. I have heard that 180.53 fixes the crashes, but haven't tried that.

I've posted a new version of the -nvidia driver to our xorg-edgers PPA,
would you mind testing it either on Jaunty or Karmic and see if it
resolves this bug?

I just set up the new PPA in my sources.list file, and switched to the new driver (karmic). I still had to set my resolution manually. I have a widescreen monitor with 1400 x 900 resolution, which may explain the problem.

This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu.
Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.
