Bug Description

This is a regression; everything worked fine until the last few days, with metacity as default although I have compiz installed.
I'm running GNOME alongside KDE4 on Jaunty up-to-date as of today, with the nVidia driver.
When I login to GNOME, there are no window decorations drawn. ATo get them back, one of two things works:
(1) System > Prefs > Appearance > Visual Effects. Setting them to Extra launches Compiz as expected. This setting does not appear to persist, though.
(2) Running "compiz" or "metacity" in a terminal.

EDITED: I got mixed up with WM and window decorator. gtk-window-decorator -> metacity.

It would appear that metacity is not launched, either. When I open an application, I can't move it with Alt + drag, nor close it with Alt+F4.

I have _exactly_ the same bug !
With a fresh account (I created one for test purpose) this bug does not appear. I am trying to figure out where does this come, but found nothing yet.

I have an nvidia 8600, Jaunty up-to-date. I am using compiz as a window decorator, choosing System > Prefs > Appearance > Visual Effects and Extra launches compiz and everything run fine...

I attached my .xsession-errors also. I had this bug when I updated from 8.10 to current Jaunty, two-three days ago.

These commands :
echo "conf: $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS"
echo "home: $XDG_CONFIG_HOME"

Does not provide any output (except a poor conf: and home: )

affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) → ubuntu

This one affects me too. Fresh install but old /home partition. Probably a configuration issue.
Same issue (no decorations), same workarounds (1-2) to get a window manager.

Same issue here after upgrading from 8.10 to 9.04. Compiz works fine if I start it manually, but isn't retained after reboot.

Workaround: adding "compiz --replace" to autostart. This wasn't necessary in 8.10.

Kind regards,
Florian

I have not installed Ubuntu for some time now, but am not seeing this problem any more on current releases. I don't remember if it was fixed or if I found a workaround a long time ago, though.
