Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Kubuntu Jaunty Alpha 5 with all updates

uname -a
Linux titch 2.6.28-8-generic #28-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 5 21:49:36 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

apt-cache policy xserver-xorg
xserver-xorg:
  Installed: 1:7.4~5ubuntu13
  Candidate: 1:7.4~5ubuntu13
  Version table:
 *** 1:7.4~5ubuntu13 0
        500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

lspci | grep Display
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

The display on this machine is shifted downwards about 50 pixels - there is a black bar at the top of the screen, and the bottom few pixels are lost off the bottom of the screen.

I tried xvidtune, but every set of parameters I tried it told me they weren't supported.

According to xvidtune the ModeLine being used by the X server is:
1024x600 47.60 1024 1040 1045 1285 600 603 608 635

From what I can tell, this is wrong. I took the following from a Mandriva install on the same machine, where the display is correctly placed:

    ModeLine "1024x600_60" 48.96 1024 1064 1168 1312 600 601 604 622 -HSync +Vsync

Which gives a perfectly positioned display with a refresh rate of 60Hz. Under Kubuntu, KDE is reporting the refresh rate as 58.3Hz.

I tried putting the above ModeLine in my xorg.conf on Kubuntu, but X just ignores it.

Update - I just tried the Jaunty netbook remix and this suffers the same issue.

I can't reproduce this bug in Ubuntu, this is probably something
Kubuntu related.

But I *can* reproduce it in Ubuntu as well as Kubuntu. So I wonder if there are different variants of this hardware and it doesn't work on some? Mine is the 1GB/16GB SSD, 8", UK version.

mark, I imagine that you only get this "shift" inside the x server. if you switch to another tty, the prompt should be at the top of the screen, am I correct?

also, do you have compiz enabled? if yes, could you please also try without?
thank you

Yes you are correct - on switching to another tty I can see that the screen is correctly positioned.

I do not have compiz enabled. I'm using kwin effects, but the problem is the same if I turn them off.

Thanks.

sorry i forgot to ask this earlier, could you also please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and your current /etc/X11/xorg.conf files...

Also, if you haven't done this already, try with an empty xorg.conf file. Attach Xorg.0.log from that attempt, too.

Thank you, and good luck

My current xorg.conf is virtually empty anyway. This is also what I get if do dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg.
I will attach that and my Xorg.0.log

xorg.conf that goes with Xorg.0.log above

For reference, this is an xorg.conf that was generated when I had Mandriva (also with KDE 4.2.1) installed on this same machine. On this installation the screen was not displaced. This Mandriva installation uses a different version of X; I tried this xorg.conf on my Kubuntu installation but it made no difference to the problem, this version of X ignores nearly everything in the file. Notice how the ModeLines probed by Mandriva (using gtf) and different from the ones in the Xorg log from Ubuntu I attached above.

So, what does that mean? Is there anything I can do to fix it? I don't know what an EDID is.
