Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

<http://launchpadlibrarian.net/23359915/advanced-336755.png> shows that the "Install them side by side, choosing between them each startup" option is available even when there are currently no operating systems installed.

The option should be available only if there is at least one operating system already installed.

Do you happen to recall what was on /dev/sda1? I suspect partman can resize it, and the "install them side-by-side" option will shrink the empty partition and put Ubuntu next to it, just as it would with a partition that had data on it.

Sorry, I have no idea what was on /dev/sda1, I've never used that computer. Evan Dandrea took the screenshot (it's from bug 336755), so I suggest asking him. ;-)

If Ubiquity exhibits that behavior when a computer's only HD is empty, I suggest punting the possibility of installing on only part of the disk to the "Specify partitions manually" option. I don't think it's likely enough to warrant an explicit option (not nearly as common as shrinking an existing Windows/Mac partition to install Ubuntu alongside), and even if it was, it would need completely different text because there is no "them".

It shouldn't do it when it's empty - only when there's a resizable partition there to resize.

Sorry, by empty I meant was a partition without an operating system on it.

Still an issue in 10.04:

The side-by-side message appears when you install to a disk with one empty partition and some free space.

Does not happen in Natty daily of 18 March, this should be marked as Fix released. When starting install on an empty partition, only Erase disk and install, and Manual configuration options are available, no Side-by-side install. See the screenshot attached.
