Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

If I run
  sleep 5; gedit
in a terminal and then lock the screen before gedit opens, then when it does, my GNOME panels are raised so that they are visible above the screensaver.

This is a privacy problem; for example, you could find what programs are running behind a locked screen by sending the person an IM.

I’m running Jaunty with current compiz 1:0.7.9+git20090211-0ubuntu5. Similar symptoms have been observed in Intrepid (though perhaps not with gedit in particular).

The bug is still present in karmic.

I also noticed that the gnome-panel covers fullscreen application in another case:

1. Start a fullscreen application (ex. gnome-terminal with F11)
2. Change desktop and start a new application
3. Go back to the previous desktop, gnome-panel covers the fullscreen application

As noted in #427097, this and #427097 might be related - I can reproduce this bug (336932) with compiz, but not with metacity.

I experience the same problem with gnome-terminal and emacs in fullscreen mode. After switching Desktops and starting a program or maximizing a window, the gnome panel covers my fullscreen apps.

I see that this was declined for Lucid and Maverick. Should I bother nominating it for Natty?

Another thing probably related to this (so I didn't raise a new bug) and easy to reproduce:

If you you have a few windows open on the desktop, say firefox, terminals, nautilus etc, then lock the screen by clicking the menu on the top right panel or ctrl+alt+L.

Now plug in a USB memory stick. On my machine, all my windows appear on top of the screen saver, including the newly opened nautilus window that pops up for the memory stick. I'm just using a blank screen for the screen saver.

This is on a fresh default Maverick x86 install, with default desktop effects enabled (set to normal mode on the dialog).

As mentioned earlier, this has privacy and security implications. To see someone's locked desktop, all you need to do is plug in a memory stick.

I can’t reproduce this in oneiric. Has someone tried reproducing in natty?

Also not reproducible in 12.04+. Please test on these recent releases and reopen if it still affects.
